Royce
Maybe since Mario wasn't as popular in Europe and South America before, the movie has more of a novelty factor to them? Meanwhile for Asia it seems like it's the "same old same old" so they'd rather just replay their favorite Mario games and think it's pointless to watch the movie. Honestly the movie could be seen as just one giant cutscene in the video game if you've played Mario games your whole life.

Nintendo has always been popular in Asia, as well as in the rest of Japan. Europe and the UK in particular have always been Nintendo's weakest markets. Sega dominated the UK once upon a time (the 90s). Europe is the land of the PlayStation. And Nintendo has no market share at all in South America. There wasn’t even a digital store in Brazil until 2020, lol. There’s no official product distribution. The box office turnout so far has been very interesting. Lopsided in some cases compared to the gaming industry. Yeah it's very interesting. The only market that's not surprising is the domestic which has always been Nintendo land and is proving to be the case again at the box office. Also Illumination has some of the biggest hits ever here and last week was autumn holidays. It’s a shame we dont have box office numbers anymore 😕

JustLurking
Since everywhere in Asia is underperforming it would only make sense for Japan to do its own thing and just have this pop off in typical japan fashion jokes aside, I think it should atleast do better than minions2 there, maybe not by much though

Hey let's not exaggerate, Mario is very famous in both Europe and South America but just not as much as Usa/Canada and Japan (where however it still won't gross incredible numbers) Plus in Latin America animated movies are very popular since on average they have many more kids and teenager than Europe and North America and usually they are most of the public

Mario is very popular in Latin America for most generations (mine and my nephews), and the level of marketing and recognition for the movie was high, specially in Mexico as @Mau mentioned. From a Deadline article: In Mexico, 7-Eleven was a partner, with Super Mario Bros. taking over the inside and outside of stores in Monterrey (their biggest Mexico location), as well as Mexico City. To celebrate the Monterrey installation, 7-Eleven hosted a launch event on March 28 where they invited press, influencers, and consumers. The event had a lighting ceremony, lights and music, and an appearance of a Mario Kart. The larger 7-Eleven program included in-store signage across all 1,875 7-Eleven stores in the country. Carlangonz
On the record of Nintendo's books Mario wasn't big in sales in Latin America. On the other hand; through "alternative media" of course Mario has been massive. They may have gotten late into the market but that doesn't mean they were unknown. Just less pirated or emulated.
