Strange World and LighYear flopped because they aren't fun. Mario is fun. It's simple really.

Pretty much. Yup. If Elemental is a crowd pleaser that delivers the good it'll do well and start reconditioning folks that Pixar is theatrical first then streaming later.

If Little Mermaid fails, it'll be due to quality and not the other reasons folks are harping on too.

Aladdin was a big, leggy hit and had Will Smith as the genie...

I couldn’t care less what the people who complain about “messages in movies” have to say. It’s been that way since the beginning of time. People are just letting themselves get riled up by Fox and co. and it’s tiring.

That being said, of course “social issues” shouldn’t be the entire crutch of a marketing campaign. That would be bad business. I don’t think that’s what’s happening at all though. That’s just what people want to latch onto and focus on and outrage over.

If someone can name me one Disney movie that entirely relied on “wokeism” or “social issues” to carry their marketing campaign, I dare you. It doesn’t happen. It’s a ridiculous argument.

Back to Mario... Really want it to get to 200M+ 5 day even if they need some of that Puerto Rico fudge to get it there. I doubt they will need it though!

I don't see how it misses 200m at this point.

I assumed Saturday bumps would be lessened and Sunday drops bigger than normal?

We'll see, but I don't see it dropping more than 40%. A 3.5M weekend will give it a 34% drop.

If it were that simple, we’d have several Mario level performers a year.

Well, yeah, you're right. The fact that there hadn't been a proper Mario movie pretty much ever. And, the games especially lend themselves to an animated family film. And the brand is enormous as he's likely by far THE most known video game character among those 6 to 66 years old. And, for better or worse, it's essentially fan service the movie...  And, heavy, heavy nostalgia dose with all other pluses considered... And, it's fun... All working enormously in its favor.

Like I said before it's like when Force Awakens was the true sequel to Star Wars people had been waiting for forever. Exploded. Or, Jurassic World with the park being open and functioning feeling like the sequel people had always wanted to Jurassic Park. Exploded. That's Mario now.

lightyear was just undone by baffling creative decisions i dunno why it was a mildly dour interstellar riff about them being stuck on a planet. A fun space adventure with Tim Allen would've been a big hit. dunno how they fucked that one up.

That is it, in a nutshell, for Covid era movies.  People are sick of feeling not-happy.  Kids especially.  So, bright, cheery, happy, "we won" movies are perfect for movie release right now.

They are also sick of drama, no matter who's right in the drama.  They just want normalcy.  Baggage on movies is dragging them down.

For these reasons, this is why I'm down this summer on Flash (DCU and actor drama), Indy (4th movie failure), and Little Mermaid (too many subpar past live actions and direct to streaming ones)...and high on MI7, Barbie, and Spidey, b/c they seem bright, colorful, and ready to deliver amazing things (1 amazing stunts, the 2nd amazing colors and fun, the 3rd amazing animation) with no past negative baggage...not saying those 3 outgross the former 3, but I look at value, so production budget to overall box office performance, and I think there, they will...

I mean, I can't argue with pretty much any of this...Though, as I posted earlier, there's a bit more too the Mario success... It's kind of hard to screw up Mario. Maybe another studio doesn't have it break out like this but pretty much every studio that trades in first rate CG animation would've had a hit on their hands. There's never been a proper Mario movie and it lends itself perfectly to being a CG animation family film. It's honestly kind of hard to believe it didn't happen sooner... I assume Nintendo was super protective of the properly after what happened in 1993.

I wouldn't say that The Batman is very fun but it did pretty well all things considered. Wakanda Forever is super heavy and did rather well too. I'm probably forgetting some other examples...

Sonic 2 is a fun, well received family film that couldn't even generate a 3 multi off a 70M OW DOM. Because Sonic isn't Mario.

I do wonder how a fun Crash Bandicoot flick would though. He's my favorite of the big 3.

Yup. Where Lightyear ended is actually where it should've began... They were about to have a fun space adventure. And, yeah, replacing Allen was a shockingly bad choice.

How bad would Saturday and Sunday need to perform to end up with only 195m for the 5-day? 😆

Fantastic numbers for Mario obviously but Air is doing great too. With strong WOM (the audience applauded at the end of my showing yesterday afternoon) and little competition in the weeks ahead, it should surpass Manchester by the Sea to become Amazon's biggest theatrical release (great choice they made ultimately to send it to theaters tbh) and could easily ride all of these positives to become the early year contender for a Best Picture nomination.

With Past Lives, Oppenheimer, and Barbie all coming out in the summer (and maybe even Mission Impossible who knows now) it looks like it’s gonna be a repeat of last year where we get multiple nominees from the first part of the year.
