Watcher Falling Down in a plane as I’m catching up on some 1993 releases. Had never even heard of it, and ended up loving it. Michael Douglas is simply incredible

Was huuuuuugely controversial the year it came out* and ended up being one of the more insightful/predictive films about the evolution of the American Culture Wars.

* And, let's be honest, still controversial today.

Just shows what a banger of a year 1993 was that it hadn't been mentioned until pg 2 of this thread.

Watched Cliffhanger for the first time last night and enjoyed it, but I couldn't stop thinking about a version made 20 years later once Tom Cruise turned into a stunt maniac and got IMAX cameras in play for at least a chunk of the movie

I watched the Firm last night, speaking of Tom. Every 90s character actor is in that thing.

Did you happen to notice Tobin Bell in a very very quick cameo? Those are the kind of roles he had before he got Saw. He had a similar role in Mississippi burning,  and another one in Malice.

But yeah it's great seeing people like Ed Harris and Paul Sorvino and the porridge man LOL.

Then of course the bigger ones like Gene Hackman Jean triple horn and even Holly hunter. And then Gary busey's in it for about 45 seconds as well LOL

Yeah the summer of 93. The Firm, In The Line of Fire and The Fugitive all big hits. I really miss the 90's sometimes.

Speaking of the Fugitive. Watched that for the umpteenth time again last night. This was its opening weekend anniversary. It still holds up so well. Tommy Lee Jones is so great. He def earned that Oscar.  And this may be my favorite Non Indy or Han Solo performance of  Harrison's. Andy Davis really peaked with this movie.was not  able to keep that momentum of having this and Under Siege back to back for some reason.

Early to Mid 90s were very good for having populist dramas/thrillers with stacked casts

Dave is another forgotten gem from 1993. Ving Rhames even has a small role in it and this is pre pulp fiction. I think he even has hair LOL

Fugitive I think it's going to go down as a timeless classic. I think you could probably watch that film 30 years from now it will still be as perfect as it is today and is perfect as it was in 1993.

We had a question about Strictly Ballroom. Wikipedia, Letterboxd, and IMDb all have it listed as 1992. But the US release date was February 13, 1993.

Do we want to count it or not?

I always think it's easier to go by just the general IMDB/Wikipedia year, especially for international films back in the 90s some would be released in the US years after their original date. I feel like that's how we've done these retrospective ones in the past. it makes sense for a current year list to be US release date but after years have past nobody thinks of these films as from their US release years.

Really torn between ranking based on my personal favorites and ranking based on my movies I think are generally great regardless if they're one of my favs. There are some movies that would rank high on both lists, but there are others where I think the movie is great but I'm not the biggest fan, and then there are movies I don't think are "good" but I love them anyway.
