its pathetic that we call a 10M gross in a huge market like Japan as impressive. It appears there is limited appeal for hollywood movies in Japan. Its crazy considering how many hollywood movies used to gross 10B Yen earlier.

It isn't just the number itself. It's also the nature of the market, the type of film in that market, the competition from the local industry, and so forth. For years, superhero films were almost entirely an American phenomenon. That seems to be changing, but it's a slow process, and it's mostly taking effort for these films to have a more international appeal.

In an absolute sense, 10M may not seem like that much in a market like Japan. But in the sense of this film, it seems a perfectly good result.

You got it wrong. $10m isn't impressive at all. But for a Thor movie, it is. Actually the increase from the first movie is the one that's impressive. That shows that superhero movies are getting more accepted in Japan. Usually, only Spiderman did big numbers there, while other superhero movies tanked. For example, X-Men 3 only made 1.5 billion yen in the year when Hollywood movies were bigger (Dead Man's Chest and Goblet of Fire made more than 10 billion yen). But for other movies, say Frozen or TF4, $10m would still be a very disappointing number.

I still dont see 10M as a great number for a blockbuster for a big market. After all avengers grossed 45M while IM3/TDKR  did  around 25M. you can call it "decent" but definitely not impressive.

Weekend Forecast [02/08-09]01 (01) ¥230 million ($2.2 million), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 802 (02) ¥210 million ($2.0 million), I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 203 (--) ¥120 million ($1.1 million), Rush (Gaga) NEW04 (--) ¥110 million ($1.0 million), Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) NEW05 (07) ¥105 million ($1.0 million), THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 306 (03) ¥100 million ($980,000), Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 207 (--) ¥95 million ($930,000), Buddha 2 (Toei) NEW08 (04) ¥90 million ($880,000), The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 209 (05) ¥60 million ($580,000), Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 510 (06) ¥55 million ($530,000), The Little House (Shochiku) Week 3Tough weekend to forecast due to the weather situation. There is a lot of snow falling across Japan today, so I'd expecting big drops overall except for IDOLM@STER (which should actually increase due to all its sold out stage greetings this weekend), and for the openers to see subdued debuts. Advance ticket sales are dismal everywhere this morning. Films that skew older will be hurt the most, which might give I Want to Hold You a second opportunity to dethrone The Eternal Zero which has reigned atop the box-office since December. Also, The Eternal Zero exceeded ¥6.8 billion ($66 million) with 5.58 million admissions on Wednesday, its 47th day of release, and should be up to ¥7.1/7.2 billion ($70 million) and ~5.8 million admissions come Sunday.

The Eternal Zero twitter is claiming the film achieved its 8th-consecutive week atop the box-office! The film also exceeded ¥7 billion (about $70 million) over the weekend in the face of the worst snow storm in over 20 years. The Wind Rises (coincidentally, both films are sad WW2 stories featuring aircrafts) achieved 8-consecutive weeks in 1st place last year, but before that, you have to go back 10 years to Howl's Moving Castle and Bayside Shakedown 2 for a better run on top for a domestic film:Most-Consecutive Weeks at #1 [1998-]16 - Spirited Away [July 21-22 to Nov. 03-04] (2001)14 - Armageddon [Dec. 12-13 to Mar. 13-14] (1998-1999)10 - Avatar [Dec. 26-27 to Feb. 27-28] (2009-2010)9 - Howl's Moving Castle [Nov. 20-21 to Jan. 15-16] (2004-2005)9 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! It's possible.

Weekend Ranking [02/08-09]01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 802 (02) I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 203 (--) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) DEBUT04 (--) Rush (Gaga) DEBUT05 (04) The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 206 (03) Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 207 (07) THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 308 (05) Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 509 (06) The Little House (Shochiku) Week 310 (08) Zyuten Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei) Week 4With the worst natural disaster (1,300 reported injured due to the weekend snowstorm) to hit Japan since the Tohoku Earthquake almost 3 years ago, the entire box-office saw a severe drop for the weekend down 58% from last weekend. Obviously it was nowhere as deadly, but it still prevented half of the country from leaving their homes.>The Eternal Zero rules once again with its 8th-consecutive week on top, dropping 48%, to earn ¥171,390,900 ($1.7 million) with 128,392 admissions. Its 51-day cume is now ¥7,097,070,000 ($68.5 million) and 5.78 million admissions.>Tiger & Bunny: The Rising edged out Rush as the weekends top opener, taking in ¥130,479,900 ($1.3 million) and 73,716 admissions on only 94 screens. This number is quite impressive actually, much lower than if the snow storm hadn't hit this weekend, but it's on par with the opening of the first film despite that and it'll without a doubt outgross its predecessor due to the massively deflated opening.>Rush opens in 3rd place on 629 screens to ¥84,920,600 ($830,000) and 65,688 admissions. This is without a doubt a disappointing number, and it would have opened well over the ¥100 million (~$1 million) mark but given the weather situation, it's understandable and legs will more than likely be very strong.>And just outside the Top 10 (#11), Gravity exceeded the ¥3 billion milestone with ¥3,019,010,000 ($29.1 million) and 1.92 million admissions after 9 weeks in release. Its run is slowing down, but if it can win big at the Oscars next month, there is still a chance it can reach ¥4 billion (~$40 million). Since the weekend drops are comparable to those of the Tohoku Earthquake weekend, I expect most films will remain flat or see small increases next weekend like in 2011. Legs for all the films that opened the weekend before or during the Tohoku Earthquake were quite exceptional following the disaster and recovered quite well. Many films are already reaching half-capacity or better at several locations across the country, too.

Early Saturday Estimates (02/15)

¥126 million ($1.2 million), 0, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) NEW
¥70 million ($680,000), -18%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 9
¥50 million ($480,000), -31%, I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 3
¥48 million ($460,000), 0, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) NEW
¥32 million ($300,000), 0, Lee Daniels' The Butler (Asmik Ace) NEW

¥25 million ($240,000), -41%, Rush (Gaga) Week 2
¥23 million ($220,000), -45%, The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 3
¥18 million ($170,000), -45%, Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 3
¥16 million ($150,000), -29%, Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 6
¥14 million ($130,000), -17%, The Little House (Shochiku) Week 4
¥8 million ($78,000), -89%, Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 2
¥6 million ($58,000), -42%, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei)

Ugly drops coming off last weekend's already massively deflated weekend. The weekend is disappointing again due to the crazy snow. Everything (Tiger & Bunny aside) would have been looking at very small decreases, remained flat, or even managed small increases on a normal post-disaster/storm weekend, but the snow hasn't let up yet.

A few notes about the weekend:

>The Eternal Zero has finally been dethroned after 8-consecutive weeks on top. Even with a significant shift on Sunday between it and The Mole Song, I don't think it can make up today's gap.

>This is the 21st-consecutive week that a Japanese film has topped the charts. The last imported film to do so was Despicable Me 2 back in September.

Weekend Estimates (02/15-16)

Posted Image
[The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji]

01 (--) ¥260 million ($2.5 million), 0, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) ¥142 million ($1.4 million), -17%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 9
03 (--) ¥105 million ($1.0 million), 0, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) NEW
04 (02) ¥100 million ($980,000), -31%, I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 3
05 (--) ¥51 million ($500,000), 0, Lee Daniels' The Butler (Asmik Ace) NEW
06 (05) ¥44 million ($430,000), -46%, The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 3
07 (04) ¥40 million ($380,000), -53%, Rush (Gaga) Week 2
08 (06) ¥32 million ($310,000), -50%, Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 3
09 (09) ¥32 million ($310,000), no change, The Little House (Shochiku) Week 4
10 (08) ¥31 million ($300,000), -29%, Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 6
--¥17 million ($160,000), -17%, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei) Week 5

>Good start for The Mole Song. February is one of the weakest months of the year, so any film that opens big enough that earning over ¥1 billion ($10 million) isn't any question is a good success. If the estimate is accurate, it should be aiming for ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>The Eternal Zero finally falls out of the #1 spot, though still delivering an impressive 9th weekend gross. With the regular updates throughout the week, its total as of Sunday is expected to be near ¥7.6 billion (~$73 million).

>Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit looks to have gotten off to a decent enough start. It could have certainly opened below ¥100 million like many similar films have down over the past few years, especially with the snow still effecting much of the country, so the estimate being above the mark is good. A total over ¥500 million ($5 million) would be respectable.

>While there was a Saturday estimate for Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (last weekend's #3 film), there isn't a weekend estimate. It declined 47% at Toho Cinemas, but looking at the Saturday estimate from yesterday I'm guessing Toho Cinemas is where it's playing the strongest and don't expect it to hold that well.

>As usual, there is no weekend estimates for THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE due to its very limited release, but it did increase its admissions by 20% at Toho Cinemas over the weekend. If it doesn't see a weekend increase, the drop should be small enough to rank 5th/6th for the weekend.

Weekend Ranking [02/15-16]

01 (--) The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 9
03 (--) Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) DEBUT
04 (02) I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 3
05 (03) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 2
06 (04) Rush (Gaga) Week 2
07 (05) The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 3
08 (07) THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 4
09 (--) Lee Daniels' The Butler (Asmik Ace) DEBUT
10 (06) Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 3

>The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji was the film that finally bumped The Eternal Zero out of first place. The film saw an impressive debut of ¥282,207,700 ($2.8 million) with 209,935 admissions on 293 screens. Had the snow let up over the weekend, it probably would have broke the ¥300 million mark. Either way, good debut in February and it should end up near ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>The Eternal Zero has to finally settle for a 2nd place finish after 8-consecutive weeks in 1st place. It only dropped 18% over the weekend, however, and brought its 58 day total over ¥7.5 billion ($73 million) with 6.13 million admissions. And it is still on track to become the highest-grossing, non-Bayside Shakedown, domestic live-action film in nearly 30 years.

>Jack Ryan: Shadow Recuit got off to a respectable start opening on 333 screens. The film earned ¥112,957,200 ($1.1 million) with 92,752 admissions during the weekend frame. Not bad, it'll definitely exceed ¥500 million (~$5 million), and aim for ¥600-700 million (~$6-7 million).

>Lee Daniels' The Butler only debuted in 9th place on 114 screens, and brought in ¥41,905,500 ($410,000) with 35,148 admissions. Certainly a lackluster debut, though it could have been worse.

Weekend Forecast [02/22-23]

Posted Image

01 (01) ¥200 million ($1.9 million), The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 2
02 (--) ¥160 million ($1.5 million), Kamen Teacher: The Movie (Showgate) NEW
03 (02) ¥120 million ($1.1 million), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 10
04 (03) ¥80 million ($790,000), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 2
05 (04) ¥75 million ($740,000), I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 4
06 (--) ¥60 million ($590,000), Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) NEW
07 (06) ¥45 million ($440,000), THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 5
08 (07) ¥40 million ($390,000), Rush (Gaga) Week 3
09 (08) ¥40 million ($380,000), The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 4
10 (05) ¥35 million ($350,000), Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 3

Kamen Teacher is tricky to gauge. TV ratings were very mediocre, and it's being released by Showgate (independent distributor) so it's only playing in 140 theaters. But there seems to be enough fan interest that it may see a decent debut.

Kick Ass 2 is also really hard to gauge. The original was only released in a handful of theaters (vs. 214 this time around), but if online movie sites are anything to go by, it gained fans on video release because the sequel is pretty high in searches. Any film with Chloe Moretz in it, however, has high search results (pervs) and none of her films have ever performed well.

The box-office is beginning to hit a very dry patch, the bottom half of the Top 10 especially, as it usually does right before upcoming Holiday frames. Bring on March and Spring Break with its many notable releases.
