Yeah, it's got to be school. That would easily explain why Yokai Watch dropped even harder - its audience is almost entirely made up of kids.

Here in the USA, BH6 dropped on Tuesday; evidently, some schools went back into session on Tuesday instead of Monday.

Even though BH6 is attracting a wider audience than Yokai Watch, it's still attracting a lot of children (and isn't it also big with high school/college-age girls/women who would also be going back to class this week?)

Weekend Forecast (01/10-11)

02 (02) ¥319 million ($2.7 million), -37%, ¥6.10 billion ($52.1 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!(Toho) Week 4
03 (--) ¥190 million ($1.6 million), 0, ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) NEW
04 (--) ¥140 million ($1.2 million), 0, ¥200 million ($1.7 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) NEW
05 (--) ¥120 million ($1.0 million), 0, ¥145 million ($1.2 million), Taken 3 (Fox) NEW

05 (03) ¥73 million ($630,000), -44%, ¥970 million ($8.3 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 4
07 (04) ¥67 million ($570,000), -36%, ¥1.58 billion ($13.5 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 5

09 (06) ¥45 million ($380,000), -35%, ¥1.84 billion ($15.7 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 7
10 (--) ¥40 million ($340,000), 0, ¥40 million ($340,000), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Gaga) NEW

The post-New Year weekend isn't kind to holdovers, so expect some hefty drops around 35/40% for most films. For the films that saw increases last weekend, drops over 40% could also easily happen.

>ST MPD looks like a a typical mediocre January opener right now, unless it really picks up in the evening. Hopefully it can open close to ¥200 million, which should be enough for January to have a ¥1 billion film.

>The Psycho-Pass movie is the most-interesting film to track over the weekend. It's directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, known for the blockbuster Bayside Shakedown series, and it delivered a very impressive opening day yesterday (Friday), maybe above ¥50/60 million ($500,000). However, since it's only playing on 103 screens, it's more difficult to project, though I wouldn't be surprised if it's the top debut this weekend.

>Taken 3 isn't doing well, but the franchise isn't big in Japan like it is in other markets. It's actually doing pretty bad at the moment, but I'm pretty confident it'll pull it together as the day progresses.

Mid-Day Report [02:30 PM],
Usual Locations (~1/3 of Market), Saturday, 01/10/15

30,252 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Week 4)
29,998 - Big Hero 6 (Week 4)
14,051 - ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (NEW)
13,718 - Psycho-Pass: The Movie (NEW)
7,163 - Taken 3 (NEW)

3,966 - Ao Haru Ride (Week 5)
3,479 - The Vancouver Asahi (Week 4)
2,748 - Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (NEW)
2,292 - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 5)
1,842 - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 5)

Yo-Kai Watch doesn't do too much after this point, since it skews so young, so Big Hero 6 will comfortably win the weekend. The fact that it's still beating/keeping pace with Big Hero 6 at the mid-day point is impressive, though, and the race between these two films could go undecided for several weeks.

ST looks on track for 75,000/85,000 admissions for the day, so achieving the roughly 150,000 admissions needed to break ¥200 million over the weekend is doable, but not assured quite yet. *Fingers crossed*

Psycho-Pass is doing very well in its near-limited release, but it's hard to say where it's headed for the weekend.

Taken 3... eh. It might do 45,000/50,000 admissions for the day, so 100,000 admissions over the weekend (¥120-140 million) is possible, if an uphill battle. This is pretty much inline with the last film I believe, and last year's Non-Stop.
