BK007
Examples and why did perceptions change or what were people missing the first time round?
AniNate
Alien and Blade Runner are some notable ones. Originally the consensus was they were just a rote sci-fi horror and a soulless effects showcase, but on later viewings people began to appreciate how much more effective they were through their slow-burn pacing and production design. CloneWars
Empire Strikes Back had very mixed reviews when it came out. Now, it is considered the best SW film of them all by a majority of critics and fans.
Gopher
As Wikipedia describes it, 2001 received 'ecstatic praise and vehement derision' when it first opened. To this day, plenty of people still hate it, but it's a classic for a reason.
Fanboy
Fight Club. It was considered very controversial when it was released until people started seeing how brilliant it was.

Jessie
DH2, give it time and critics minds will change.Titanic to some degree, when it came out I believe critics wanted to bash it for how cheesy it was, but now many have come to see it as a masterpiece. 4815162342
A pretty famous instance of shifting opinions came with Once Upon a Time in America (1984).For the theatrical release in the U.S. the studio forced the film to be cut to 139 minutes (a deletion of 1.5 hours from its running time) and rearranged the film's scenes in chronological order instead of the non-linear narrative Leone had set up for his original cut.The result was that the U.S. release was widely panned, some critics calling it one of the worst films of the year. However when the original 229-minute cut (that was released in Europe and other places) finally trickled into America, there was a huge reversal of opinion and many of those same critics began calling the film one of the best of the decade. Lordmandeep
Another great example is Vertigo....Another famous example in India was Sholay...The film had bad reviews and then went on to to be the biggest hit ever in India.Lol that film is like the Star Wars of India, so many references and such made to the film even 27 years latter. CloneWars
DH2, give it time and critics minds will change.Titanic to some degree, when it came out I believe critics wanted to bash it for how cheesy it was, but now many have come to see it as a masterpiece.Titanic was well-praised and then started to get backlash when it started to make a ton of money and kept winning awards, and then years later the backlash became worse, and now it seems that the backlash is starting to reverse and many people are considering it one of the best films ever made. MasterDodsen
Titanic has been through a roller coaster of praise and hate. It got initial hate due to the budget, the delay release and time length. Then it got even more hate because of the amount of money and accolades it received. Then it started to be seen as the grand masterpiece it is. Then, the cynics began to come back as more and more people, for some reason, are starting to hate the movie again. WTF?!The Empire Strikes Back. I don't know what critics were smoking in 1980, but it must have been some good shit to give this a bad review. Audiences took that into account and the box office nearly halved Star Wars. However, over time, reflection of just how marvelous of a movie it actually was, unfortunatly, it was too late for the box office to be repaired. I mean only 290M? Really? This should be up in the level of Star Wars, E.T. and Phantom Menace.
