tupek
Effectively, Instructions Not Included sold 15 million admissions, more than Avatar. And it was absolutely shocking, because Mexico is still a country were people dont usually pay attention or are interested in local movies. In fact, the bet attended Mexican movie was (if I recall correctly) "El Crimen del Padre Amaro" in 2002.But in 2013 the things changed. Months before INI, there was a local comedy called "Nosotros los Nobles" which had a very good opening but spawned fantastic legs, and went on to become the highest grossing and most attended Mexican movie by a wide margin ( around 8 million adm). That was shocking too. Then came Instructions Not Included, which, unlike Nobles, in had a massive OW, but was frontloaded. But nearly doubled its admissions. Rsyu
What?! I'm a little surprised it's so high but naver pre-release ratings aren't really a reliable indicator of how well the film will do in the box office. The expectation index (How many people want to see the film before release) is a little bit more trustworthy . peludo
Insane that a film without 3D or IMAX has beaten Avatar in both admissions AND gross. The only other film I can think of to have done that was Elite Squad 2 in Brazil (even though The Avengers subsequently outgrossed it - but didn't beat its admissions).Did any other markets have a regular 2D film come out after Avatar and beat both its admissions and gross? Avatar doesn't have to have been the #1 film in the market in either admissions or gross, and the film that beat it doesn't have to be #1 today, or even have been #1 then. I just want to know which markets had a non-IMAX 2D film outgross Avatar.Looking at Mexico, Avatar has $44m and Instructions Not Included has $46m, but USD grosses for the top films in Mexico have gone up since 2009. I did compare their totals in pesos on the last weekends BOM recorded their grosses - INI is higher than Avatar. And since it's regular 2D, I assume INI also sold more tickets in Mexico than Avatar did? It is really hard to do it in most markets. I do not have the exact data, but in Spain, I think 8 apellidos vascos has already sold more admissions than Avatar. By June, 8AV had sold 9.3 million admissions and Avatar, excluding the special edition, sold 9.2 million, but I do not discard that today, 8AV had already sold more than the 9.5 million that Avatar sold in total. Anyway, Avatar grossed 77 million € and 8AV has grossed about 58 million. 3D factor is really hard to compensate in 2D. Inflation will make it some day, but for the moment it is too early.

Pretty darn impressive run by 8AV though all the same, and if it beat avatar in admissions then it was probably the more popular film in Spain too. I really must make time to watch it

In relation to the film, I advise you that it can be extremely difficult for a person who is not Spanish or do not know about peculiarities of certain regions of the country to enjoy the film. It is very very oriented to Spanish people.

Rsyu
Begin again is having a great run in Korea, already at 907,445 admissions and is absolutely locked to cross 1 million. It once again goes to show that music films are a really popular genre in Korea and that word of mouth can still make or break films. My 7:30 showing was packed full which was a pleasant surprise Edited September 3, 2014 by Rsyu

Rsyu
poor start by My brilliant life. Controversy surrounding the lead actress Song Hye-gyo over tax fraud claims is likely to be playing a role in this. How to train your dragon 2 fell dramatically to place 84 with 6 admissions today. It currently stands at 2,996,383 admissions. It doesn't look like the distributor (CJ entertainments) will be pushing it to 3 million adm. Roaring Currents crossed 17 million admissions today. Whether or not it can reach 18 million will depend on how it does during Chuseok holidays.

But It's a little bit unfair, because Indonesia has been growing as a market since 2009. In 2009, the #1 movie of the year made $6.6m. In 2013 it's $15m.
