And unfortunately...that is how critics are describing it too. 6/10 average rating on RT with strong praise for the visuals and pretty harsh criticism of everything else.

It's not just the visuals that is really wowing the critics who like it though. Most of them mention the energy, earnest sincerity(close to naivety for some) and the enthusiastic creativity that went into bringing this world to life, which isn't the same as just praising the visuals if you really dig into the reviews.

Funny thing is, the ones who actually disliked it(the 29% rotten reviews) mostly mentioned all of that as an actual negative for them, which just shows how different they are from someone like me, but that's another story.

I blame Besson for the mess. Guy should have been actively involved in the marketing of this film and should have gone pillar to post to get a big distributor for atleast North America. Also, he should have hired a dedicated marketing team that helped distributors all around the world to market this in a much better way. Such an ambitious and visual stunner just flat out tanking everywhere is not the way to present it. I know filmmaking is hard and on top of that marketing, but if you really want to succeed then you gotta leave no stone unturned. Valerian deserves success. Sadly, it seems to be destined to vanish without even putting up a fight at BO. And I am not talking about just domestic. Wait and watch when overseas numbers hit.

If you're remotely interested in the project, you should be thanking Besson, not actively blaming him. This was entirely a creation from his efforts.

I think the trailers are awesome, really well done. Probably the movie this year so far with the best trailers. But this movie was never an easy sell. Hopefully people are just waiting to hear from others if this is good to decide to go see it.

Quote

Besson, for his part, is quick to praise Nolan as a visionary filmmaker—and points out that if, say, Inception 2 were coming out on July 21, he would have moved Valerian off the contested release date for fear of the films cannibalizing each other’s audience.

As it stands, however, the Frenchman believes moviegoers will likely divide along generational lines. “Everyone under 50 will go see Valerian,” Besson says, “and everyone above 50 will go see Dunkirk.

Doubtful, though what no one will be seeing Valerian in is IMAX because of this dumb ass stubbornness.

Except Russia and the Middle East believe it or not. Only two markets getting Val in IMAX, prob because of August release and low staying power expectations for Dunkirk

Apparently there is a $5 ticket discount for Valerian on every IMDB page right now. Can't blame the marketing team. They are doing the best they can.

But this also seems desperate for a movie that hasn't even opened yet.

I'm predicting it for the 5th place launch (behind Dunkirk, Girls Trip, Apes, and Spider-Man, in that order) with $15-16M. Consumer interest clearly just isn't there with all the signs, if it weren't for the long running time (which in turn limits the showtimes per day) most of the bigger chains would probably book it on only one screen this weekend rotating between 2D and 3D shows.

It's not desperate, almost every movie has those discounts these days.
