The Warner Bros. Thread | Will NOT merge with Paramount...capitalism is still terrible

Recommended Posts

Merger is getting close and rumors are that WB C suites are going to be raided, and for good reason. While Disney quite clearly King of Hollywood, WB should absolutely have several steps up on Universal, Paramount, Sony etc and yet they are widely viewed as having underperformed their potential in recent years.

  • The HBO Max stunt was a PR disaster which has seemingly cost them incredible sums of money.
  • Marketing is questionable
  • International performance is highly inconsistent
  • They routinely lose the highly important battle for premier release dates

...they have some work to do. 2022 should be a decent year with Batman, Fantastic Beasts, Elvis, Black Adam, Flash, and Aquaman (which should move), but oof 2023 and beyond look like shit.  An update on their IP...

  • Godzilla/Kong/Monstersverse seems to have run its course.
  • Dune has a future. Tough to say exactly how high the next installment goes, but there will be buzz and audience for it.
  • MATRIX 4 was colossal dud across the board. Sadly this is probably done unless they get it into the hands of a much more commercial director.
  • THE BATMAN is out and has been very well received and is making solid money. Assuming quality holds, the next installments for this series should be highly successful.
  • FANTASTIC BEASTS...who knows. If they could get back to Harry Potter, things would be much better.
  • ELVIS has potential to over perform, but worst case, looks like a showcase for upcomer Austin Butler. If they could lock him into a franchise ala Chalamet and Pattinson, it could be useful.
  • BLACK ADAM should do well. If quality is there, this will likely be a summer breakout.
  • FLASH has lots of potential, though the release date is not great.
  • AQUAMAN 2  has lots of potential, but the release date is TERRIBLE. Even if it holds its own, no doubt Avatar will heavily cannibalize it. Their strategy must be to maximize Aquamans performance. It must move it looks like Avatar will finally be released.
  • WONKA...I mean, who knows. This doesn't seem like a film anyone was asking for.
  • WONDER WOMAN...we'll see. WW84 will not well received or widely viewed. They need to make this relevant again, tough to see how they could bring back Chris Pine either.
  • JOKER...a sequel to the Todd Phillips/Joaquin Phoenix break-out would no doubt do very well, but tough to see where the story goes without involving yet another version of Batman.
  • SUPERMAN...who knows. Enormous amount of untapped potential, but after 2 botched launches with Routh and Cavill, really can't afford another misfire.
  • SHAZAM...is anyone really asking for this? Feels like it is being made out of desperation.

Their 2023 slate looks horrendous. Currently, only Wonka in March, Shazam in June, Dune in October. That is it. What a colossal clusterfuck. Expecting The Batman 2 with a prime summer 2024 release date being announced like tomorrow.

The disrespect for the first Latino led superhero film!! Not even a mention for Blue Beetle in your rant 😕 That film has a ton of potential! Cool visuals, character has a great power set, Latinos are sorely underrepresented and it has a good release date plus a popular up and coming lead actor (thanks to Cobra Kai).

Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom needs to move to December 25 if they are intent on keeping it in 2022. November 23 would have it be sandwiched between two more anticipated films. BP2 will have zero effect on it by then, and Avatar will have been released for 9 days. Considering it's a sequel, it will most likely have made 50% of its money by then.

Honestly, they should just move it to summer 2023 just like how WB did the same to Half-Blood Prince by moving it from November 2008 to July 2009.

If Latino crowds powered Suicide Squad BO for El Diablo then Blue Beetle could be huge, especially since he's the closest character DC has to Spider-Man.

hope they nail blue beetle. Also I think the hbo max gambit while controversial did help them set up the service. Their marketing movie wise and tv wise needs to be upped though.  The discovery merger seems like its gonna make them conservative with their spending...which isnt ideal.

They'll want IMAX/PLF screens and Avatar 2 will almost certainly have those on lock throughout the holidays if it stays where it is. They won't want to find themselves in another situation like they did with The Matrix 4 (although I suppose in retrospect that movie was going to have too much stacked against it even if it had been a theatrical exclusive). Still think they should go to late March where they could easily force John Wick into moving away.

Why are you hating on the 2nd greatest superhero movie (Shazam)?

Matrix would not have exceeded $60m even if it had been a theatrical exclusive.

I'm still waiting for the announcement of A2 to move. Its best bet is 2023.

Whats going on with supergirl?

I bet they've got Christina Hodson working on a script, and if The Flash (and Sasha) are received well, we'll probably get an announcement before Christmas.
