China's zero covid approach was great in 2020 but after the introduction of vaccines they should have lifted the restrictions. Look at situation in India similar population as China but got of covid much faster. It's not like covid has gone forever. People will need to live with the virus.

Stalling as much as possible has its benifits. India had millions of excess deaths in 2021 and 2022. China held as much as it could and opens up to the milder Omicron variant, much more prepared both in medical infastructure and knowledge about the virus than they was 1 or 2 years ago and with much better vaccination stats etc. Hundreds of thousands will still die in China due to Covid more likely but that probably would have been in the millions by know if they opened in 2021 . There are stuff to weight against the negatives and suffering the lockdowns and Zero Covid brought and wonder if it was a net postive that it was done for as much as it was sustainable. Especially since we dont know the long term Covid effects on health for tens of millions

India had casualties I agree but most of them were before vaccines were introduced and I don't specific number but some of the causalities was because of infrastructure failure instead of covid per se. After introduction of vaccines everything changed though. I already said that China's zero covid policy was really effective in 2020 before vaccines came but they still continued with that strategy even after vaccinating people. If restrictions had been lifted there would have been herd immunity present further restricting the spread of the virus.

China correctly opted for "zero covid" policy during the first 2 1/2 years of the pandemic, when deadlier variants like Delta were still rampant, and vaccines or knowledge of the virus has not matured. America has a quarter of China's population, and "living the the virus" during that early period has resulted in excess of a million deaths. If China with 4 times the population were to do the same, simple maths would mean 4 million deaths. Also China's medical industry is not as matured as America, so there were every chance of even more deaths.

Indeed, China not only prevented more deaths during these 2 1/2 years, its economic growth were the highest among the largest economies of the world as well.

However, as the virus especially since the onset of Omicron has evolved into a milder strain, and as vaccines and knowledge to deal with it has matured, the benefits of "zero covid" has reach a state of diminishing returns. For better or worse, the Chinese government has calculated that now is indeed the time to start living with the virus. And hopefully, the worse effects of the previous virus strains are well and truly behind us. Well for the sake of humanity I hope so.

China govt didn't calculate anything lol. It was due to people protesting. I'm pretty sure if the protests didn't happen this policy would have been still going on. Also you people don't realise just how bad zero covid policy was. People didn't have freedom to do even their job just because few people were found covid positive in a particular area and the response being shut down everything. Talking about economy few billionaires in India doubled their money in 2020 when virus hit hard. Same thing china didn't suffer initially but now the effects are showing. Economy is in slow down https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-62830775.amp

Are the Chinese aware that in the rest of the world no one talks about COVID anymore ? Everyone is gathered in bars, stadiums, outside and at home with family or friends but in China they are still stuck in 2020, it's a shame that China is so closed and is moving further and further away from the rest of the world (In addition they could have had the American vaccines which are much more effective and we will not be there today)

If they don't want American vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) they could still use Astrazeneca which is British and Swedish or Sanofi made by France, but I guess they just put all the "western world" together so worse for them 🤷‍♂️

Vaccination wise China's issue isnt so much the quality (as i said there have been hospitalization and death rate comparisons in countries that used both Chinese and western vaccines and the Chinese were only slightly worse) but that it does not have a great vax rate among the elderly and also their booster shot % are lagging behind. Their vaccine policy has been softer than other countries and because of zero covid people felt somewhat "safe" and a lot didnt keep up with the vaccination effort . They should have just gone all in with the vax push with their own vaccines in the last few months but only did mediocre in that regard so the population rn is more vulnerable than it should have been. But i heard they are starting to circulate a inhale-able vaccine that shows good promise so that might help as well

So called american vaccines were actually primarily developed in Germany (Pfizer helped out with trials and manufacturing).

Not talking about Moderna.
