Saying that 170m is disappointing for MI5 is ridiculous. It's doing great business, maybe expecting AoU and JW numbers were too optimistic.

Exactly!!  It's only a disappointment to posters who predicted outrageously high numbers which so many people on this board seem to do!!

I think we are all to blame, those of us who gave outrageous expectations.

If Minions doesn't reach 100m then neither IO will gross 85 million, and nor will Ice Age gross 150m! And neither will KFP3 earn 400 or 500 million either!

We should re-think all our expectations. If MI5 couldn't cross 150m, then all the above films will most likely not do crazy either, especially summer 2016 films after the blackout period which seems to be a doom period for the Chinese BO.

Still, Minions seems to have grossed a breaking record for animated films in China? So it's still an excellent number.

You have to take into consideration that MI5 is in 2D. It will probably have nearly as many admissions as JW. Sorry that it can't double MI4's tally, what a flop #sarcasm

m not saying flop, am saying we all made the mistake of thinking crazy numbers for it and for Minions and other films.

We all thought MI5 might cross 200 or 220m in China which it won't, and some thought Minions will cross 150m in China which it won't either

Both are not flops at all - but a victim to unrealistic expectations

Interesting facts: MI5 is the record for a 2d film opening and Minions for an animated film opening.

Kylin, news are reporting Minions OD was actually 20.1 not 19.3...

SCREEN DAILY:

With a $20.1m opening day in China, Minions is now the second biggest animation of all time worldwide with $1.080bn.

Universal tend to overreport their movies, just like FF7 and JW.

They'll adjust them in the future.

Minions may still do 100M and MI5 150M, but I don't expect much more than that. Decent for both.

Fake, interested on your take on how much you expect for the following films, given the need to lower expectations after the Minions and MI5 results: KFP3, IA5 and IO.

Wow - looks like Minions OD isn't disappointing AT ALL. I take that back! Deadline says Minions OD is the highest ever for an animation in China (both Hollywood and Chinese) and  is 44% higher OD than the 3-day opening weekend of Monkey King - the highest animation ever!

‘Minions’ $20.1M China Bow Is Biggest Opening Day Ever For An Animated Film

Universal and Illumination’s Minions marched into the Middle Kingdom today with an estimated $20.1M (125M yuan) opening. That makes it the biggest opening day for an animated film ever in China; roughly 50% higher than the previous record held by Kung Fu Panda 2 (81M yuan). In more recent comps, it’s 40% higher than the three-day weekend of Despicable Me 2 back in January 2014. The first movie in the franchise was never released in China, but DM2 ultimately made about $53M there.

On a local currency basis, Minions‘ first day out is also notably 44% bigger than the three-day opening of Chinese summer hit Monkey King: Hero Is Back (86.5M yuan) which on September 9 set a record as the highest-grossing Chinese animation of all time at 995M yuan ($156M).
