Welcome to the first annual The Box Office Forums Film Critics Society Of People Who Aren't Actual Critics But Simply Forum Members Who Thought They Could Do This Whole Awards Thing Better Than Groups Like The Boston Online Film Critics Association Whose List Of Winners In Major Categories Reads More Like Oscar Predictions Than Genuine Choices For What They Thought Was The Best Of The Year (or simply BOFFCSOPWAACBSFMWTTCDTWATBTGLTBOFCAWLOWIMCRMLOPTGCFWTTWTBOTY for short)! Thanks to Coolio for the name.

Here's how this will go down- you guys will share your favorites for forum events of the year, movies, TV shows, and fanboy alliances. By January 21, 2013, PM me your choices for the following categories. Pick five per category (in no order of preference), with the exception of BEST PICTURE, which is 10 pick and in order of preference. It's important for as many members to participate as possible so that these awards reflect the opinions of the entire board.

I wanted to wait until January 22nd so that everyone who wanted to see Zero Dark Thirty, the last 2012 film to receive a wide release, would get a shot. As for international members.. take a flight to America if you have any movies you need to see before making your top 10.

Only one pick per category for every category except Best Picture? That's a bad setup just asking for a massive bottleneck of ties.It would be much easier to have a two-stage process, first solicting picks to become the official forum nominees, then soliciting a second set of ballots to pick the winners.

Courtesy of Steve Pond, a description of how those procedures work (for Best Picture. They can be easily tweaked for 5-person/film categories too when selecting nominations):

Round 1

After counting the total number of ballots cast, the accountants began by determining the "magic number" required to guarantee a nomination. That was done by dividing the total number of ballots by 11. Example: If 200 critics voted, that would be 18.18. If the result is a whole number, you add 1; if it's a decimal, you go up to the next highest whole number.

In our hypothetical example, the magic number would be 19. (The reason: It's impossible for more than 10 films to each receive 19 votes, so getting that many guarantees a spot in the top 10.)

The No. 1 choices on each ballot were then tallied. Any film that was not the first choice of at least one voter was eliminated from contention, regardless of how many No. 2 or No. 3 votes it received.

Any film that had more than the magic number of votes became an automatic nominee.

Round 2

The next step starts by determining whether any films received enough votes to trigger an Academy wrinkle called the surplus rule. Created so voters wouldn't be wasting their vote if they put a massively popular film at the top of their ballot, the rule takes any film that gets 10 percent more votes than it needs (down from 20 percent in the past), and re-allocates the unneeded portion of the vote to the film ranked second on the ballot.

For instance: If "X" needed 19 votes to be nominated and got 38, it really only required 50 percent of each of its votes to secure a slot. So on every ballot that included "X" in the top spot, 50 percent of the vote would have been shifted to the film ranked second on that ballot. If it got, say, 25 votes but only needed 19, then 76 percent of each vote would go to "X," and the remaining 24 percent to the No. 2 choice.

(If that choice was no longer in the running because the film didn't get any No. 1 votes and was already eliminated, the accountants went to the highest-ranked film on the ballot that was still in play.)

Any films that get pushed over the magic number here become official nominees.

Round 3

Because we wouldn't have the same sheer numbers as the Academy, we diverge a bit from the new Academy rules and simply eliminate the remaining films with the lowest amount of 1st place mentions and redistribute those people's votes based on the highest-ranked film on their ballot that is still in contention, and continue with that system until we have enough films that hit the magic number.

I doubt we're numerous enough or mathematically sophisticated enough to take the one-percent or five-percent rules into account here.

MGK17, please just PM me your responses. I want to do the 1-10 system for BP because that worked very well last year. I'd prefer if everyone just sent one pick for everything else- it's easier on everyone's ends- BUT if enough people post in here that they want nominees we'll do nominees. Fishnets, what nominees would you suggest for that award?

I don't mind either way. And, I think I've got most of my picks finalised except for picture. Les Mis and ZDT are probably guaranteed to make my list. Django probably won't, and that's pretty much it.
