  1. Last year VD fell on a monday and the only comparable movie playing was No Strings Attached. It increased from its Sunday number and was up over 250% from the previous Monday. It was much later in its run than TV but if I had to hazard a guess I'd estimate the VD number as roughly the same as the number it gets today, around $10-$11 million.
  2. The Vow I saw this yesterday at 3:55. 225 seat theater, just shy of a sell out, it was 90% full when the movie started but people kept arriving for another 15 minutes. Trailers: Think Like a Man- pretty good reaction and it does look interesting The Lucky Ones- the crowd really liked this one, but it looked like pure dreck to me, but then I'm not a 20 something girl. Seeking a Friend For The End Of The World- another good crowd reaction, and much more to my liking. Men In Black 3- almost no reaction. The crowd was overwhelmingly female, there were some couples but there were mainly groups of 4, 5 and 6 women showing up together, I could almost cut the estrogen with a knife. The crowd clearly loved this movie, positive reactions, laughs, some sniffles and excellent exit comments after it ended. I actually quite liked it myself, even Channing Tatum's "block of wood" acting was better than usual. I can see why this is overperforming, it catered to it's target audience perfectly. 8/10
  3. A double feture night for me. In addition to the regular movies the big Cineplex chain is having The Great Digital Film Festival this week so I finally saw "The Big Lebowski" on the big screen and followed it up with "Chronicle" The Big Lebowski Scotiabank Theater, auditorium #5. 6:30 showing, 225 seats, roughly 175 people No trailers. As expected, the crowd loved it. When the management introduced the film before it started he asked how many people hadn't seen it before, maybe 10% had never seen it so 90% were built in fans. I love these film fests, you get the best crowds, everyone was having a good time and laughing during the movie. I'll definitely be seeing more movies during the week. 9.5/10 Chronicle Scotiabank Theater, auditorium #6. 8:25 showing, 225 seats, sold out. Trailers 3 Stooges- surprisingly good reaction. First time I've seen the trailer and it was better than expexted. Battleship- some snarky comments and several mentions of transformers from the audience. There was one more but I can't even remember what it was. The crowd seemed to like it, especially the parts where they were beginning to use their abilities, the talent show was probably the high point for positive crowd reaction. I heard more than 1 "It was better than I thought it would be" around me when it ended. It was a good movie for its type. 7.5/10
  4. Ensemble is an acting award, not the same as best picture, and The Help fully deserved that win. It's a true ensemble with 6 or 7 strong performances. Viola and Octavia, of course, but Jessica Chastain was fantastic, Emma Stone was very good and completely underrated, Allison Janney and Bryce Dallas Howard were also good in their roles. Also, even though their romes were smaller Sissy Spacek and Cicely Tyson were amazing. That is a very deep ensemble.
  5. Coriolanus 1:50 showing, 70-75 people in a 200 seat theater. only 1 trailer. I can't recall the title but it was a polish film about Jews escaping during WW2, looked interesting. The movie was quite interesting, excellent performances. I actually liked the old English used, it just works so well with anything Shakespearian. The audience seemed engrossed and there was some positive chatter at the end. Interesting that almost nobody got up after it ended until the credits were nearly done. I'd give it a solid 9/10, probably the best 2012 movie I've seen so far.
  6. To be fair, does anyone even know it's playing? I see a lot of movies and I've seen the trailer exactly once and 0 TV spots. I'm actually going to see it today, that 1 trailer viewing sold me on it
  7. I'm glad Modern Family won, it's one of my favorites andreally the only one of the nominees that deserved to be nominated. I still can't believe TBBT and HIMYM didn't even get nominated but Enlightened and The New Girl did (TNG is good, but inconsistent so far)
  8. Bah, it's a complete sausage-fest this year.
  9. I don't think this is rigged, it's more of a narrow demographic that actually votes. I personally think the majority of voters are girls in their teens to early 20's. Going by that assumption I picked most of the winners, although there were surprises, like Chloe Moretz winning favorite actor under 25 when the nominees were her and 4 Potter actors, and I'm still not sure how Person of Interest won best new drama
  10. The Darkest Hour I decided to see this mainly because War Horse was sold out and it was only on 1 screen so the next show was 3 hours away 3:15 Showing, 45-50 people, more than I expected to be honest. Trailers: Man on a ledge- no reaction The Grey- small reaction Chronicle- another small reaction. The movie. I went in with low expectations figuring it looked a lot like Skyline, but it actually wasn't bad. It won't make my top 10 for the year, but neither will it make my bottom 10. The crowd seemed fine with it, certainly no disparaging comments like Skyline. Even the acting was decent, mainly thanks to Olivia Thirlby who has some good acting chops, the rest were ok but there were some pretty cliche characters. All in all I found it to be a decent time filler on a slow x-mas, but it'll probably end up under 20 mil total.
  11. With 2011 almost over and nothing left in the way of remaining movies that look likely to change my top 10 here are my 10 favorite 2011 movies 1- Crazy, Stupid, Love 2- The Help 3- Bridesmaids 4- The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 5- Hanna 6- No Strings Attached 7- Thor 8- Puss In Boots 9- X-Men First Class 10- The Muppets
  12. Is there anywhere that has a list of all 2011 releases to date? I had a list of what I'd seen on BOM, but that's gone. I'm sure I've seen over 50 different movies this year but there's no way I'd re-create the list.Ah, BOM does have the 2011 domestic boxoffice list, it's by BO and not date but does list all 581 movies.* = saw it more than once2010 holdovers I saw in 2011*Easy A*Black SwanTrue Grit2011 movies:Harry Potter DH2 7/15Transformers DOTM 10/13Twilight BD1 11/18Hangover 2 5/26Pirates of the Caribbean OST 5/20*Fast 5 4/29*Thor 5/6Rise of the Planet of the Apes 8/5Captain America 7/22*The Help 8/10*Bridesmaids 5/13X-Men FC 6/3Rio 4/15*Puss in Boots 10/28Super 8 6/10Rango 3/4Horrible Bosses 7/8Green Lantern 6/17Hop 4/1Bad Teacher 6/24Cowboys and Aliens 7/29*Crazy, Stupid, Love. 7/29Battle L.A. 3/11Immortals 11/11*Limitless 3/18Contagion 9/9Moneyball 9/23*The Muppets 11/23*No Strings Attached 1/21Unkown 2/18Sherlock Holmes 2 12/16Midnight in Paris 5/20*Friends With Benefits 7/22Source Code 4/1Insidious 4/1The Dilemma 1/14Hugo 11/23*Hanna 4/8Paul 3/18In Time 10/28Sucker Punch 3/2550/50 9/30Drive 9/16A Very Harold and Kumar x-mas 11/14Arthur 4/8The Debt 8/31Priest 5/13The Mechanic 1/28*Our Idiot Brother 8/26Your Highness 4/8The Three Musketeers 10/21The Thing 10/14The Tree of Life 5/27The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 12/21Young Adult 12/9Melancholia 11/11Shame 12/2Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 12/9Hobo With a Shotgun 5/6I Saw the Devil 3/4Sleeping Beauty 12/2Wow, 64 different movies, 13 of which I saw more than once.
  13. Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 7:30 showing, 250 seat theater- sold out, and I arrived 40 minutes early. After it ended I checked the board as I was leaving and both later shows were sold out too. SH2 had 2 sell outs on the night and MI4 had at least 3, the final showing wasn't sold out but it might have later. Trailers- John Carter- pretty good reaction 21 Jump Street- there was reaction, but it's hard to call it good, there was some laughing and mocking of it. Ghost Rider 2- mixed would be the best description, but as soon as it said "3D" there were some harsh comments. The movie- Wow. 2011 definitely saved one of the best for last, definitely in my top 5 but it needs time to sink in before I pick where in my top 5 it ends up. Right from the opening credits where there was a visual extravaganza with the music the audience was right into it. It would be nearly impossible to give much in the way of crowd reactions without spoilers, but suffice to say there are scenes that make you squirm and there were a few walk outs after a couple of the more intense scenes (if you see it you'll know which ones). Exit chatter was overwhelmingly positive. I don't know about best picture but Rooney Mara put in a best actress performance in my mind, and I honestly wouldn't have been able to pick her out of a line up before this movie. 9.5/10
  14. Pretty good year, most of my favorites had solid seasons.Breaking Bad moved into my #1 position with an absolutely amazing season/True Blood was solid, but not quite as good as last season.Dexter is still going strongBig Bang Theory and How I met Your Mother are still the best sit coms running despite how long they have been going.A decent year for new shows, I tune in to a fair number of them but only 2 have reached "don't miss an episode" status:Revenge is the big surprise, I got hooked immediately and the show hasn't had a weak episode.2 Broke Girls is the best new comedy, I just love Kat Dennings sarcastic humor and acid delivery and Beth Behrs is a great foil for her to play off.
  15. Actually the original Zombieland was originally intented as a tv series. The "zombie kill of the week" was going to be a regular feature of the show.I don't see Zombieland 2 getting made but if a series comes to fruition I'd at least give it a chance and check it out, but it would be tough to get a cast with the chemistry of the original.
  16. Several come immediately to mind:FireflyDead Like MeWonderfallsGoing back a ways:BrimstoneGoing way back:Kolchak: The Night Stalker
  17. It's way too early to tell if any of those will be any good, especially since most of the casts are TBA. I usually get my best inklings on if a show will be good by the casts (this year was easy, Zooey Deschanel and Kat Dennings, bingo!). Obviously some shows surprise since pilots can often have relative newcomers. The only one of those I'm feeling much about is the Mandy Moore one, she does have a large following and looked right at home in a sit com in her How I Met Your Mother guest appearance.
  18. I ended up seeing 3 movies this weekend, SH2 on Friday and YA and TTSS todaySherlock Holmes 2Friday 4:45 showing, roughly 150 people in a 400 seat theaterI only recall 3 of the trailersJack The Giant Killer- A bit of chatterJohn Carter- got the crowd buzzing, lots of talkingThe Dark Knight- big reaction, heard a few "Oh Yeah's!"The crowd seemed to like the movie well enough, it was paced well and the banter was quick and witty, but some of Holmes deductions ended up being based on things the audience wasn't really shown, or was very fleeting.Generally positive remarks after it ended-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Young AdultSaturday 12:50 showing, roughly 150 people in a 225 seat theater (same # of people as Sherlock but it felt more crowded)Trailers-One For The Money- the crowd really liked this, and god help me so did I. I normally can't stand Heigl and the plot seemed a lot like Aniston's "The Bounty Hunter", but with Heigl taking Gerard Butler's role but I still found the trailer good for some reason. :rolleyes:The Dictator- The reaction was huge, people were laughing during the trailer. This looks to be exactly the type of movie that fans of Adam Sandler movies just love (yeah, I know it's Sacha Baron Cohen, but it looks exactly like a classic Sandler Movie, think Zohan), over the top fun. It's on my must watch list now.The movie was quite good, it was... different, the laughs were mainly from comments that would be delivered jokingly or ironically in other movies but delivered with a deadpan seriousness in this movie. Exit comments were positive, lots of discussion about Theron's character.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, SpySaturday 3:40 showing, over 200 people in a 250 seat theaerThe size of the crowd was surprising and the average age of the audience had to be mid 40's at least, the 2nd oldest crowd I've seen this year, only the opening weekend crowd for The Help skewed older. The audience was engrossed in this movie, I could hear talking around me throughout, but they kept it quiet enough so as not to be annoying. There was a lot of discussion going on after it ended, I could hear people discussing how it fared compared to the book, mainly that it was very close, but that the movie was better.
  19. SHAME 2:15 Showing (1st show) I was really surprised by the size of the crowd, 300 seats and at least 90% full, after the front 2 rows it was jam packed. Given the subject matter, the 18A rating (in Canada) and that it was the first show I was expecting maybe 50 people. 3 Trailers Coriolanus - This looks really good and has a great cast. Definitely some buzz. A Dangerous Method - Again, a little buzz. The Iron Lady - Meryl looks and sounds spot on, I expect an Oscar nomination for her, but the movie isn't really my type and I didn't hear much reaction to the trailer. The movie was interesting, and I did like it. The audience was pretty quiet, with a few mild laughs at a couple of spots. I counted 3 walk outs, actually lower than I would have guessed. I was prepared for the Fassbender nudity (some actors really do have the total package ) but I was surprised at Carey Mulligan, I really wasn't expecting such an extended full frontal scene from her, but she looked great. There was definitely some exit chatter, but it was all whispered, rather unusual compared to most movies. Grade- A-
  20. Wow, NYE number keeps going lower every time I look. I assume the latest number (5.08) is the Fri. actual? Just plain bad. Anyone have a budget estimate for NYE? I assume it would at least be as big as Valentine's Day, and probably larger. I also see my long wait is over and The Help finally passed Bridesmaids domestic total. That was a fun neck and neck race from start to finish to watch. For me it was the best match up to follow all year. #11 - The Help- $169,118,300 #12 - Bridesmaids- $169,106,725
  21. Another quiet weekend. BD1 held better than expected, The Muppets held worse and everything else seems close to expectations. For me there is one bright spot, I'm still watching The Help vs. Bridesmaids neck and neck battle that I've been watching since TH opened with nearly identical numbers and it now appears all but certain TH will edge past BM sometime next weekend. TH did an estimated $165,000 this weekend which puts it less than $107,000 behind BM. Current totals: BM- $169,106,725 TH- $169,000,000 They are both in my top 5 for 2011 but I've really been pulling for TH as I'm a big Emma Stone fan.
  22. Hugo1:40 showing250 seat theater about 60% fullTrailers-Tintin- little to no reaction againChipwrecked- solid chatter, especially at any musical bitsBig Miracle- surprisingly good reactionThere was 1 more but I can't recall it.This movie was beautifully shot and well crafted, every scene just felt "real". The crowd was fairly quiet, but riveted.I really had no idea what the plot was supposed to be as I had only seen the teaser trailer and thought the automaton would be somehow more central rather than just a plot point (a key one though) and the story played out beautifully. I like when I have no idea where a story is going and how it will play out, it's so rare these days. The 3D was well done, even if I feel that, as usual, it wasn't really necessary.A solid 9/10
  23. BOM Friday #'s are up. http://boxofficemojo...11-11-25&p=.htm BD- $16,900,000 Muppets- $12,275,000 AC- $4,550,000 Hugo- $4,532,000
  24. MuppetsFriday 5:10 PM220 seat theater, close to 90% full.Trailers-Tintin- dead silenceArietty- minor chatterBrave- also some chatterChipwrecked- the crowd ate this up. Not my cup of tea but it obviously appeals to a lot of people. The movieWhat a great and fun movie. The crowd was into it right from the start. I got a touch of nostalgia and found it quite humorous, but a lot of the people around me must have found it hilarious as there were pockets of big laughter all around me. Exit chatter was all positive, hard to tell whether the kids or adults were gushing more. The leads were perfectly cast, you could tell Segal was a fan, he gave it his all and is such a big likable guy, and Amy Adams is cute and extremely likable as well. The cameos were great, lots of laughs at Jim Parsons appearance.9.5/10
