  1. The last couple of years the big chain here has "The great digital film fest" for a week, 2 screens showing 4 different movies each per night (some of the bigger movies get a 2nd showing later in the week). I actually saw The Big Lebowski on the big screen for the first time during this years fest, awesome experience.
  2. I remember that, it rivals the original Shrek for impressiveness, the original actually increased by .3% in it's 2nd weekend. That's not something that happens very often, especially on movies that open over 42 mil.
  3. 19 is still solid. Loss of IMAX and 2 new openers had to have some effect. I was hoping 20/65 so 19/62 (ish) is still a good number. As long as it is over $250 mil by the end of the weekend I'll be happy.
  4. First she predicted 18/60Then it went to 20/61Now it is 19.5/55I don't get her internal multipliers, she raises Friday by 2 million but the weekend goes up just 1, then she drops Friday by .5 million but the weekend estimate goes down 6 million? Bizarre.
  5. The weekend multipliers seem a bit "off" on these early estimates. They predict 60 mil from an 18 mil Friday but only 61 mil when the friday estimate goes up to 20 mil.If THG goes above 20 today it should be close to 70 for the weekend.
  6. I swear, every time someone types "SQL Error" I read it as "Sequel Error".
  7. New can mean many things.New to the scene, just breaking into hollywood.New to fame- lots of the rising stars have several years of relative obscurity before being noticed.New as in age- lots of very young rising starsThere is a bumper crop of young talent in several age brackets right now.The youngstersChloe Moretz (15)Elle Fanning (14)Dakota Fanning (18)Abigail Breslin (15)Hailee Steinfeld (15)Saoirse Ronan (17)The 20-25 yr oldsEmma Stone (23)Jennifer Lawrence (21)Elizabeth Olsen (23)Emily Browning (23)I'm sure there are a lot more, but I'm trying to list only those that could (or already do) have both critical and commercial appeal.
  8. Yes, tickets are $7.50 instead of the usual $12.99. The Scotiabank theater is also the busiest theater in the area, right in the heart of downtown, so it gets more sell outs than most.
  9. Solid Monday number. I'd guess the Tuesday number stays flat judging by the sell outs so far. It's 5:10 here right now and the Scotiabank has sold out the 1:30, 2:40, 4:45, 6:00, 6:50, 7:15, 8:00 and 9:15 shows. I'd bet the last 2 shows also end up selling out (10:05 and 10:30)
  10. The Hunger Games Friday 7:30 pm showing in Ultra AVX, 404 seats 100% sold out Trailers Breaking Dawn part 2- the expected oohing and awwwing from the younger female crowd members The Avengers- perfect follow up trailer, had the guys wowing. Snow White and The Huntsman- everybody seemed to like this one Dark Shadows- another great reaction, Johnny Depp right back in his wheelhouse What to expect when you're expection- weakest reaction, but still some reaction and a few laughs The Cabin in the Woods- This got a surprisingly large amount of interest, I had no idea about the premise so the trailer definitely looked interesting to me. The crowd was a good mix, 60/40 f/m, maybe 70/30 under 25 vs over 25. One thing that struck me was the number of girls with braided ponytails, once I noticed it jumped out at me, a new fashion trend from THG? The crowd was right into it, some real vocal groups during certain scenes, not annoying like you'd think, it actually worked well with the movie, just something about seeing a movie in a jam packed theater with an enthusiastic crowd really adds to the experience. Exit chatter was all positive from what I could tell, people were discussing the books and he differences in the movie without anything negative to say. I'd say it was done about as well as possible and still get a PG13 rating, although I would like to see an R rated version on the DVD when it comes out.
  11. My 25.2 is right in the 25-30 range, but I'm hoping the actual is the 30, bigger is better for this movie.
  12. Nice, J2 is just 5 mil from hitting $100 M, between the rest of its regular run and dollar theaters it is close to a lock now.
  13. It is really a coin flip between THG and CF but I finally settled on THG because the games themselves were so well done, especially with Rue.
  14. So far I've seen 16 movies releases in 2012The LoraxThe VowSafe HouseContrabandChronicleUnderworld AwakeningJohn CarterThis Means WarGhost Rider 221 Jump StreetHaywireWanderlustGoneGoonCoriolanusShame2 more coming up, Jeff who lives at home on Tuesday and The Hunger Games on Friday
  15. John Carter 7:00 showing in 2D, 225 seat theater roughly 75% full. Tcket cost $0 (used some of my SCENE points) Trailers Battleship- silence Prometheus- silence Brave- New trailer to me, heard some chatter Avengers- this got some reaction. No idea if it is a new trailer, first time I've seen a trailer for the movie. The movie, not great but better than I was expecting. My take is it is an ok movie, but I could see the potential for this to have been awesome. The crowd seemed generally entertained but there were some mixed comments when it ended. I'd say this would be worth paying a matinee price to see it in 2D, but not worth paying full price in any format.
  16. Yup, looks like The Lorax took down HSX (Maybe they cut down a tree )
  17. GONE 12:50 Showing, about 35 people in the audience Trailers (no reaction to any of them) Prometheus The Lucky One Silet House The movie. Pretty quiet crowd, didn't hear anything during the movie and only heard 1 exit comment, something like "That was actually pretty good" I almost didn't see this, the low boxoffice and middling reviews almost put me off, but I decided on a matinee before the Academy Awards. I quite liked it, it was a straight up thriller without any laughs added (intentional or otherwise), or any over the top action sequences. The minimal action is more grounded in reality. It feels more like an independant movie, which I think it was originally intended to be. 8.5/10
  18. When Seyfried was on Letterman didn't she say when she signed on for Gone it was supposed to be a small independant film?Amanda certainly is talented enough, but she doesn't seem to be interested in being a big star so she makes some odd choices for movies.
  19. GOON 6 PM showing, between 90 and 100 people Trailers: Promethius- Same old trailer, looks interesting but never gets much reaction Lockout- Kind of a familiar premise (especially for Maggie Grace) and only minimal reaction, except for a great one liner at the end that got some good laughs from the crowd. The Raven- No reaction Silent House- a small reaction, some people made some unflattering comments about the reality-like film style. The movie: This was a great movie to see with a decent sized crowd, the audience was right into it with a lot of laughs throughout. This won't win any awards but it's the most fun I've had watching a movie so far this year. I will definitely be seeing this again, mabe on discount Tuesday when there will be a big crowd. 9.5/10 just because it was so much fun.
  20. I'm surprised there isn't a thread for SNL already. It looks like SNL is really desperate for a host, they are getting Lindsay Lohan to guest host March 3rd, musical guest will be Jack White (I wonder if he signed on before learning who would be hosting?)http://ca.news.yahoo.com/lindsay-lohan-guest-host-saturday-night-live-next-022041764.htmlNEW YORK, N.Y. - Lindsay Lohan's comeback trail is leading her to "Saturday Night Live."NBC says the troubled actress, whose career in recent years has been upstaged by legal and personal problems, will serve as guest host of "SNL" on March 3. The network said Sunday that the musical guest that night will be Jack White. It will be Lohan's fourth turn as host of the late-night comedy show. She presided in 2004, 2005 and 2006, before her career faltered. In recent years, she has mostly been in the public eye in connection with her multiple arrests and episodes of substance abuse. In December, she appeared in Playboy magazine in a mostly nude pictorial.
  21. Ghost Rider 25:40 showing, around 70 people, about 1/3 full.Trailers (nothing new)Battleship- standard mild reaction21 Jump Street- Actually the best reaction I've seen for this trailer so farPometheus (3D Trailer)- First, I had no idea this movie was going to be in 3D before I saw this trailer. Not a lot of reaction.Amazing Spider-Man (3D Trailer)- The trailer is even better in 3D, something I can't recall ever saying before. The movie was pretty good cheesey fun. Not a big crowd but they must have been the hard core fans as they seemed to enjoy it . The effects were ok, the acting was passable, although Cage really went over the top a few times. I wasn't the only one to notice a couple of cameos by Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy) and Christopher Lambert (Highlander).A solid 7/10
  22. I'm actually a bit impressed with the number for TMW. As has been mentioned it was just 1 showing with limited advertising (even I didn't know it had a Tuesday showing until I was checking movie times on Monday) and it had huge direct competition from TV, which wa the obvious #1 choice for couples yesterday. The weekend numbers should be interesting.
  23. This Means War Trailers: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- The crowd lovedthis trailer, it had several lines that had the crowd laughing. It's geriatric humor so it probably won't make huge boxoffic but the trailer sold me on seeing it. Seeking a Friend Friend For The End Of The World- moderate reaction Prometheus- not a lot of reaction, but it was mainly a teaser The Amazing Spider-Man - Crowd really liked it, a couple of gils next to me commented "I'll see this". The trailer looks so much better on the big screen. There was actually an animated feature before the movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift 2 (may not be the exact title). This was hilarious, Scrat is the best character in the series and is used well in this mini feature, a nice treat before the movie. The movie- Interesting note first, I bought my ticket yesterday and it was in theater 1, which is about a 200 seater, when I arrived today it had been moved to theater 9, which is the biggest auditorium at about 400 seats. It wasn't a sell out, but there were over 350 people. Hard to say if this will break out or if the crowds were purely due to discount tuesday and Valentine's Day. I know the reviews aren't good, but you wouldn't know that from this crowd, they were clearly having fun with laughs at the right spots. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised, it's been a good while since I've enjoyed a Witherspoon movie. 8/10
  24. I just checked the website for the nearest multiplex to me, The Vow is on 2 screens and 4 of the 6 evening shows are sold out already, safe to assume the other shows will sell out as well. Nothing else has a sell out yet.The combination of Valentine's Day falling on discount Tuesday and a freshly released romance movie could add up to close to a $10 million day.
