I think he was like 'Let's add a twist' but the other screen writer slapped him across the face. Anyways ... It's funny how Sony was already planning After Earth 2 a few weeks ago. He's barely in the film and he is not charming, charismatic or funny in this film. That's the WS we love. This film will probably tank everywhere. He thought he was good, he wanted to deliver more and quicker, in order to rise his fame, but he just ended up adding stupid plot twists thinking that they would be good.
