Gravity OS Thread

Recommended Posts

china can over estimate the grosses of any film. studios only get 25% profit from china gross, thats assuming they ever get the profit share(china has been withholding the cut see here http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/box-office-results-in-china-keep-hope-alive-for-pacific-rim-sequel-20130731

international distributors get about 8-10 percent from local gross. they also get back money they spent on marketing. these two things studios dont do in china. 25 percent from china is roughly what studios see from any country.

I remember I predicted GRAVITY will reach $600M WW and everybody was laughing their asses off.

I still think I am over-reaching a little but I love such a daring & original take on disaster/action thriller getting

big budget treatment by a big studio. A very unconventional approach to filmmaking, yet polished, technically

brilliant and thankfully edited with a clear vision.

Now it looks like Gravity only needs about 300m OS to beat LoP WW. Easy task with China involved.

This movie may break out in a major way in China.

If a mediocre robot movie like PACRIM can

do more than $110M imagine what a high-impact

emotional roller-coaster like this movie could do.

Grosses from other territories seem to range

from mediocre to good.

I like PR a lot. More so than TF2/3 (TF1 is the best in the series).

But after the initial excitement, I won't see it again or remember any of it.

GRAVITY, on the other hand, is an all-round expertly mounted production:

cinematography, editing, acting, visual FX, sound, and last but least : score.  Even if

it is really just a "popcorn" movie instead of this visual essay on "exploration of human courage

in the face of the inhospitability of space", it is still a moving,

teeth-grinding experience. I just saw GRAVITY today for the 3rd time.

And I would be seeing it again and again. I really wish it is shot

with real IMAX camera instead of DMR. THE DARK KNIGHT looks freakin'

amazing in IMAX.

The dispute with China was resolved months ago, and 25% without the marketing and distribution costs probably isn't that different from other countries.

We would never know how these deals are made. They will never be so candid about it.

Just focus on the general revenue/gross. That's all we can do.

Pacific Rim benefited from being a bit of a Transformers look-alike, which are immensely popular in China. Add to that the fact that they had an Asian leading actress and that a significant portion of the movie took place in Hong Kong. Gravity has none of these to go with, only its quality. (are SaBu and Clooney draws in China? I don't know)
