Damn, that's crazy how much it drops. It really wasn't all that much more successful than TFA OS.

Perspective. It's new material. Making more than the very much highly-anticipated return of SW is a win in every way.

Not my point though. The point is that when you look at Avatar's OS gross, it looks like something ungodly that nothing has even come close to. Not really true though. The likes of Furious 7, TFA, and JW all got way closer to that level than it appears.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Star Wars has never been the biggest deal overseas. It's hard to compare OT but PT was constantly clobbered by the likes of LOTR, HP and POTC. None of PT movies cracked even 500M overseas (TPM came close with 495M). So TFA making a little less than F7 and way less than Avatar should be no surprise. SW is an American phenomenon in much bigger measure than it is a worldwide one.

I dont know if these data are true but if they are, we're still talking about a 300-400m gap here, and we didnt factor in the market growth and ticket price inflation (but of cause in TFA's favor 3D/2D ratio should be considered as well). Two countries for example, in 2009, before Avatar release, the highest grossing film in China made $80m. That record now is $530m. Growth in Russia, according to KinoPoisk.ru, total yearly admissions went from 2009's 132m to 2013's 177m.(no data after 2013).

A lot of countries do show movie admissions. Maybe someone could collection those info for a better comparison?

Titanic would be a 3,5-4 B WW grosser in 2016.

That s how gigantic it was, no other film wil ever do Titanic numbers because it s that very rare film that really appealed to everybody.

And also times have changed. Turnover is shorter. Avatar could have done even more had it not lost 3D screens to AIW.

But yes, Titanic is truly once in a lifetime phenomenon. Now it all boils down to OW. The bigger the OW the bigger the shot at record endgame number. Avatar getting to 750M on 70M OW is the closest we got to Titanic's legs.

No one knew AVATAR would be enormous overseas. It was not predicted to be a worldwide phenomenon. That's why making what it did was sensational.

But then again, those are existing franchises. Huge franchises. There was great anticipation for all of them. Before AVATAR's release, even the idea of it winning 2009 was mocked. Then boom. History was made.

Also, it's difficult to use this exchange rate thing. The 3D market has expanded in many territories. IMAX has also grown.

Agreed. I was just commenting on expectations about TFA overseas gross when PT history spoke against "Avatar-ing".

I've got over 2000 files and only 100 of them are quotes! As far as I know they are all real quotes as well, I didn't fact check them as I didn't make them tho.

AVATARS OS IS NOT COMPARABLE TO TFA, THE FORCE AWAKENS WAS A MEDIOCRE NOSTALGIA MOVIE THAT USED 50 YEARS OF HYPE TO SELL THE FILM. You can't just adjust the numbers by the exchange rates like that's all that has changed, it's disingenuous. Inflation, market size changes (CHINA) and 3D markets in OS countries.
