LOL the people using "How to Train Your Dragon 2 is too dark" as the excuse for its relative underperformance are really grasping at straws. Yes, the movie has turned out to be something of a disappointment at the box office compared to most expectations. Move on.

Dragon doesn't have the goofy fun factor of movies like DM2 which might hurt it.

Madagascars 2nd weekend was Father's Day no?? That would have softened the drop - you can't just pick a film and go oh let's compare unless it's totally aligned. It's unfair to give dragon that expectation - it had an "inflated" Sunday and weekend overall so 'twas going to drop this weekend. I seriously think that the well wishers on this site forget that there is a reality to how the box office operates and bitching about a film not living up to your expectations dollar wise is like griping about the date of yr birth - can't be changed and the course is set in stone.

There WILL be a Dragon 3. But this time DW won't be as arrogant wanting 1 billion. ;)

Wanting a billion does not mean they were arrogant. Thinking it would be an easy target would signify arrogance.

Geez so only 15 out of 65 or so went under 300 in the BSG, and no one under 250. That says it all for the epic disappointment it is. Especially since people on this board tend to be more conservative with animated predictions.

Expectations for Dragon were too high. Exceptions for Frozen were too low.

No. I think maybe people upped their predictions when May's slate either underperformed or didn't break out in a big way.

Some common sense, finally!

Total apples to oranges comparison there. No one had any reason to think Frozen could do more than 200m pre release, hence why no box office analyst, forum poster, or intelligent being on earth predicted 300m+ for it. We had plenty of reasons to think Dragon 2 could break 300 though.

LOL its been said multiple times in this thread and it was said a lot on last weekend's. Is it all the same person? I don't really pay attention to the avatars sometimes.

Put Mojoguy on ignore. That solves everything.

It doesn't help that his ignorance and trolling keeps getting quoted, but at least you don't have to see it every time that broken tape keeps blurping out noise.

All of those predictions came in before May.

Deadline posted their numbers. Not sure if they've been posted here.

No,they were not posted here. Here they are:

As it stands tonight, Sony will, indeed, capture the No. 1 and No. 2 box office spots with its two sequels this weekend: Think Like A Man Too is pulling in about $11.5M Friday for a three-day of around $30M

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood — the director who always delivers a quality film on time and usually under budget — saw his Jersey Boys with strong start on Friday bouyed by the East Coast moviegoers before it started to fall off a bit. Still the film based on the celebrated stage play of the same name should take in an estimated $16M to $17M this weekend after a $5.5M or so Friday
