My guess was just that Cuaron is probably the most esteemed Mexican filmmaker currently, so why not reference him? I just thought it was out of nowhere and it got a laugh out of me.

Very hard to predict at the moment, but with all the praise its getting from Cameron+Del Toro could be the next big thing.
