I asked this very question to Platinum Dunes guy Brad Fuller. His response was that horror films are hit and miss in NA but they are basically non existent internationally. Also, the DVD market has dried up and the genre hit harder than most is horror. It literally changed over night so the profits have to come from keeping the budgets low.

Both of these movies should do well in the long run. Interstellar I see finishing around $225 million, and Big Hero 6 around the same.

New Line is known as the house that Freddy built.  LOTR was made partially off profits from NOES.  And btw...today is the 30th anniversary of Nightmare on Elm Street.
