Friday numbers (Exodus 8.7 mill)

You're missing some of the competition for Catching Fire in there:

Weekend 5

CF: Anchorman + Dinosaurs + American Hustle + Saving Mr Banks = 11355 theaters, 61.7M OW

Oh, right. I was only looking at first weekends, but those movies' first weekends were in like 5 theaters, so this should count as their OW too.  Thanks!

I'm not a Tatum fan, by far, but he's had movies where he's been the main draw that have made money.  Foxcatcher also is not the kind of film his core fan base is going to rush out to see. It's like saying Scarlett Johannson isn't a draw because Under Her Skin made around $2.5m.

It's not a shocker that art house indies are usually going to make less money than mainstream movies or blockbusters.  That's why studios position them at the end of the year hoping to catch the awards wave to bigger box office.

Yikes, Exodus estimate on BOM is only a 4% increase on Saturday. They're projecting a 28% drop on Sunday. Seems too optimistic. Probably will drop down to $24m with actuals.

Exodus isn't quite the same thing, but keep in mind that the religious movies from this past spring (like Son of God, God's Not Dead, etc) usually had pretty good Sunday drops compared to the other movies in release at the time, so maybe they're predicting the same thing for Exodus here.

Foxcatcher seems to be one bleak ass movie so you cannot compare it with the rest of Tatum s output.

Jupiter Ascending is being dumped, I hope it does well but not very optimistic because it feels/ looks too Wacko for GA ... But we ll see.

Fyi, the director spent more than a year editing Foxcatcher, his first cut of the film was 4h30!

Also glad MJ 1 is not dying a slow death but still alive even if the real heavy hitters of Christmas are coming, hobbit, annie, into the woods, all the oscar movies etc ....winning the year in dollars seems difficult but the movie could win the year in tickets sales but I am not sure we have the exact breakdown for Guardians between 2d and 3d so ...

Ridley Scott should just give up at this point, let s face it, the guy has totally lost it, he is tarnishing his own name, reputation and history.

But even though the subject matter is bleak and it is an indie film, it should still be doing better.  It just got nominated for a Best Picture Drama from The Globes and might not make it to 15 domestic, while other artsy/indie Best Picture nominees will make twice that amount.  But they don't have a name like Tatum.  If he is a star, it should be performing better.

Well that's disappointing for Exodus.

Why did they cast Christian Bale as Moses anyway?

Shouldn't it be Jewish Bale?

Better comparison is Noah. Big budget Hollywood. Dropped almost 38% on its first Sunday.

Russia can be explained by the value of the Ruble absolutely plummeting lately.

CF had 84% of its gross through the same point as MJ1. That same percentage would give MJ1 a 330m finish. Except its been holding noticeably better the past two weeks than CF, so the race is really on between it and GOTG.

Yikes at Exodus. This is Kingdom of Heaven all over again for Scott. Yet again, OS to the rescue. I wonder what state Hollywood would be in right now if OS hadn't single handedly saved about two dozen films from being colossal financial disasters in the past few years. Maybe they'd actually have to learn how to budget! :o

But Hollywood knows that OS has a bigger role now than 10 years ago. So they can make movies with bigger budgets since you don't only have to worry about domestic gross.
