It's not the material that's lacking, it's the execution.  None of those directors were qualified to do a film musical [stroman had tons of Broadway experience but none on film and it showed].  Rob Marshall seems to be considered the go to guy now in Hollywood and he did Nine.

 

They should snap up one of the Disney musical animated directors. Like Ron Clements.
