Wicked if done well would be bigger than Mamma Mia! but its still making truckloads of money from the various productions worldwide so Universal don't have to greenlight it just yet.

I wonder if Into the Woods does well, will studios be willing to adaptating another Sondheim musical as a film, Follies has been rumoured but I think Company would work as a film.

The other musicals I think would be great as films are Miss Saigon and La Cage Aux Folles,

Thats actually a decent increase for Hobbit 3, could have been worse. 50m 3-day and 84m 5-day looks likely. I still think 250m final or even passing DOS is not dead.

NATM3 will have a multiplier of 5 at least. So a 23m OW should lead to +120m final. Not the disaster it seemed.

Musicals seem to be big hits more than then they are risky flops. The only musical of the decade or so that was an INEXPICABLE flop was Rent, considering its extreme popularity and iconic songs, but even that had the changes that offended hardcore fans, and the fact that it was just shitty. Phantom was a bit inexplicable too, but they tried a weird platform style release for it in a crowded market so it just never gained traction- with a big release, it would have been a bigger hit. Since Chicago came out, Les Mis, Enchanted, Mamma Mia, Hairspray, and Dreamgirls have all broken out and been big time hits. Sweeney and Jersey Boys were never, ever going to make serious money.

Into The Woods, yes.  That is where the audience for Annie will go when they hear the bad WOM and reviews for it.  Unbroken - ehhh, not so much.  No Golden Globe nods, no name actors.  Only 75 domestic for that.

Into The Woods has the quality to be big I can tell you that.  I saw it last week and was kind of blown away at how good it is.  I'm not a huge fan of musicals but I loved it.  The 2200 theater count is alarming though, I thought this would be around 3200-3400 OD.

Rock of Ages? Burlesque? Moulin Rouge only did so so business. Across the Universe. Nine. The Producers.

Not sure this is as bulletproof as you're saying.
