2015 Best Picture predictions!

Recommended Posts

AFI Top 10:

The Big Short

Bridge of Spies

Carol

Inside Out

Mad Max

The Martian

Room

Spotlight

Star Wars

Straight Outta Compton

So what does this mean? Ever since the category expansion, AFI has missed the following BP nominees (* detonates a non-American film, thus ineligible):

2009: An Education*, Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, Inglorious Basterds (4)

2010: The King's Speech* (0)

2011: The Artist*, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (1)

2012: Amour* (0)

2013: Dallas Buyer's Club, Philomena* (1)

2014: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Theory of Everything* (1)

This doesn't mean the end for The Revenant and Brooklyn is ineligible. However, this is probably the kiss of death for Hateful Eight.

Based on precedent our BP noms will be fe the AFI top 10, plus 1-2 films.

The Revenant is likely the nominee that AFI snubbed.

SOC is missing.

I doubt Hateful Eight or Brooklyn are getting in.

Spotlight and the Big Short have pretty much locked their nominations.  Strong reviews, SAG ensemble nominees, GG nominees, Critics Choice, and AFI.

Carol and the Revenant are close to locks.

The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Inside Out and Room are on the edge.

Star Wars and Mad Max are insurgents.

My rating of likelihood of noms

LOCKS

1.Spotlight

2.The Big Short

LIKELY

3.Carol

4.The Revenant

STRONG POSSIBILITIES

5.Mad Max: Fury Road

6.Room

7.Star Wars: The Force Awakens

8.The Martian

9.Bridge of Spies

10.Inside Out

WEAK POSSIBILITIES

11.The Hateful Eight

12.Brooklyn

13.Straight Outta Compton

14.Sicario

I don't see Star Wars getting a best picture nom, but it'll receive a handful of tech noms. It's too fictional and not realistic like Gravity and The Martian. A film of this genre needs to be a masterpiece like The Lord of The Rings or "Mad Max: Fury Road" to be considered for best picture. Harry Potter and the DH 2 with its critically acclaimed reviews, immense box office, and narrative that it's the final film in a worldwide beloved franchise couldn't get a nom when the best picture rules expanded to 10 nominees. Also, TFA is a sequel and the academy doesn't tend to award bp noms to sequels, unless it's a masterpiece. Mad Max: Fury Road is that special film this year with a strong possibility of a bp nom.

I just looked it up, the Harry Potter film series didn't get a single Oscar, like wtf. The third, fourth and last one really deserved some awards.

star wars out of contention for a nom. its too fantasy oriented not typical oscar fare.

now 97%, 8.4/10. outstanding considering the genre. Star wars is now equal favourite for a best picture win and should go down in the history books as  the best blockbuster of all time.

Star Wars likely won't get a nomination, but Harry Potter isn't the a good comparison. Star Wars has always had more prestige.

These predictions are fun and everyone brings something to them because they meditate and look at precursors and precedents. And then there is Halba, who judges completely based on his reaction to the movies he hasn't seen. Is there a block button?
