I really doubt they'll touch things like Furious 7 or especially Fifty Shades of Grey in the Song category. This is the Oscars we're talking about. The latter reminds me of when the Burlesque song (which won the Globe) missed 5 years ago, the reason most likely being because they didn't want to make the film in question an Oscar-nominated movie.

What? See You Again has this locked up. Let's not forget Eminem and Three Six Mafia won

I guess. I guess we'll see if the Academy will look past the fact that the series, while respected now, is still considered "trashy" (they certainly have a history of overlooking films that have an air of trashiness to them, which is probably what could be attributed to Gone Girl's total shutout besides Pike last year).

Pete Hammond is reporting a lot of Academy members he's talked to love Sicario: http://deadline.com/2016/01/pga-sicario-ex-machina-star-wars-oscars-1201676261/

Although it hasn’t had as high a profile this season as some other contenders which have been dominating early critics group voting,  Lionsgate’s  Sicario is not at all surprising in my view.  It is the most mentioned movie I hear from Academy voters, particularly men  and this just validates the chatter on the circuit.  I fully expect it to land a Best Picture Oscar nomination and possibly one for director Denis Villeneuve as well as below the line categories.  So far with nominations from the Art Directors and Editors guilds this week Sicario is having a very strong run as the race turns to the Guild voters who are traditionally  far more indicative of where the Oscar winds may be blowing.

the big thing with the song category is that the voters in that branch go to screenings that show the scene in the film where the song plays. that's why songs that aren't credits songs usually do better. furious 7's got that big emotional paul walker tribute that I think bags it a nom at least. agree w/ you on 50 shades.

Post-PGA nominations:

The Big Short

Bridge of Spies

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian
The Revenant

Room

Sicario

Spotlight

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Straight Outta Compton

Bridge of Spies will sneak in, if the Berg's War Horse could make it in with the current system in 2011 then BOS will so the same. Room will win out between the female-driven pics, see why above. Sicario's PGA, BFCA and Eddie nominations propel it in the race, and Straight Outta Compton is keeping it's momentum from the SAG noms to the PGA noms, plus it was a box office hit. Star Wars missed PGA, but the Academy in the past has always nominated the highest-grossing picture domestically for Best Picture, and I think being a gigantic cross-generational event puts it in a better position than something like Skyfall and Deathly Hallows Pt. 2.

If there are only 8 nominations, what do you think gets left out?

Bafta nominations are announced this Friday and the Golden Globes premiere on Sunday. This weekend will decide which films will receive a best picture nomination.

Nominating closes on Friday so neither will have any effect on nominations.
