While those tweets are rather effusive the reviews themselves are not universally stunning. They're kinda more along the lines of Black Mass- two incredible performances worthy of awards, but the movie itself treads familiar ground and is just pretty good.

In fairness the last two are borderline raves (at least, I think the Variety one was since 98% of the review is just retelling the plot), but yeah, irrationally relieved to hear not all critics are taken by it.

I can never really tell what Variety is thinking these days for that very reason. Tis a shame. I mean the Guardian review is certainly strong but 4/5 isn't exactly a "THIS IS WINNING BEST PICTURE" level rave, which is great, as you said, because thank goodness. Suffragette seems to be doing better review wise, even if its not getting the attention.

Yeah, the reviews are overall good, but not outstanding. Between this and Suffragette it'll be interesting to see how Focus will handle two mid-tier contenders that probably don't have much commercial potential (Suffragette probably has more mainstream appeal but if it even makes $30M at the box office, it'll be considered a huge success). At least Redmayne isn't winning back-to-back, but with how baity his role is combined with the afterglow of his Oscar glory, he shouldn't have any difficulty scoring a "keep up the good work" nomination.

I just finally saw the trailer now.

From the director of King's Speech and Les Mis? Redmayne (who gave one of my all time favourite performances in ToE)? This is going for Oscars a presume...

Then why does the trailer say New Year's Day?

Maybe that's when it goes nationwide. It opens in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on November 27.
