THE MARTIAN and THE REVENANT footage screened months back started the Oscar talk. They are absolutely aiming for that Oscar statue.

 

Pretty much any drama has one eye on awards these days, but the Martian's marketing has been enjoyably populist. I also doubt Inarritu made The Revenant for an Oscar haul - that film looks born of demented passion.

 

I appreciate we're getting into semantics but having talked to people involved in UK film production, the 'Oscar-bait genre' is sadly very real in that industry because bugger all gets recognised on an international level.

Revenant has every shot in the world to do big at Oscars this year, it will look and feel different than ANY movie this year, it is Inarritu s Apocalypse Now, movies like these rarely get made these days and only Leo s star power allowed it to get made.

 

There will be The Revenant ... and the rest, average, run of the mill Oscar bait fare.

lol Some of you speak as if Oscar baits didn't have trailers like this. CONCUSSION screams Oscar bait. THE MARTIAN as well. MACBETH too.

 

The Martian is based on a wickedly funny science book that is the entire opposite of Oscar bait.

 

The trailers are really pushing the Apollo 13 Part Deux angle because that's what sells audiences, not gimmicky science mumbo jumbo and eclectic humor.

I was a Les Mis defender (I still like a lot of that movie) but I was bored stiff by King's Speech and this seems twice as cloying.
