I saw JW last night. Fun flick!! Glad it's doing so well. We need more 80's style family adventure movies.

[bites tongue]

Anyway, is that good for Ant-Man?

ETA: seems to be ok.

Yes, anything it makes at this point is icing on the cake.

Since the primary purpose of Minions is to sell merchandise any amount that covered production costs would be a success.

It's no different than Cars 2 is for Disney. While it was one of Pixar's lowest grossing films, it was a huge profit maker for Disney which made well over $1B in gross sales off of it. (not including continual sales years later).

The numbers are interesting in that they suggest legs may not be great (especially for a kids film).

I never said Mi ions was doing poorly. Obviously it's not. However, is it ok to look at significant drops, add in poor word of mouth and mediocre at best reviews and contemplate its effect on the franchise. I guess Baumer I am not seeing what is so outlandish about that.

Give me more Indiana Jones, E.T., Goonies and Jurassic Park(1993), and I would be a happy camper.

http://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/the-goonies-2-is-coming-chris-columbus-calls-sequel-difficult-2015207

When it comes to a Goonies sequel, the film's original screenwriter Chris Columbus always keeps three words in mind: Never say die. In a new interview on July 20's HuffPost Live, the filmmaker - currently promoting Pixels with Josh Gad - told fans that yes, the sequel is happening, but no, it's not on the fast track.

Problem No. 1? There's no final script. "There are a lot of writers who are interested in writing Goonies, but we're very protective because it's such a well-loved movie," Columbus said. "The Goonies have aged 30 years, so there was a magic about that particular cast. How do you make it work now? That's a difficult challenge."

57.4% drop, a little better than 58% of Minions and IO but bigger than 54% drop of GOTG

GOTG had monster word of mouth. It's holds on weekdays were really good throughout its run. Ant-Man's word of mouth seems to be "Its good". I'm sure it will see a big bump today thanks to cheap Tuesday.

I think you hit the nail on the head RamblinRed, but I also think Cars 2 had a negative effect on the film franchise, but product sales were through the roof. We will see as they try to ramp up marketing and sales when Cars 3 rolls around.

57.5% drop, higher than Captain America (but that was 4 years ago on the same weekend roughly).

Cap is a good comparison given the very similar release date and similar size opening. For the weekend it was 88% of Cap's total. For Monday it's 82.56%. If that continues it will struggle to reach $150m. Of course maybe it will be more like JP4 and play as a weekend movie more than a summer weekday movie.

What remains to be seen is whether WOM is "it's good, you gotta see it in theaters!" or just "it's good, maybe catch it on video". My friend the die-hard Marvel fan enjoyed it, but he didn't really think it was worth going to see in theaters.
