Piracy seems like an easy explanation for low ancillary revenue in China but not too long ago piracy was said to be the reason why movies weren't doing well in China and the rest of Asia. There is more piracy today than used to be back in the 90s but the box office is booming pretty much everywhere in Asia. I think there is another reason why studios don't see money from TV and home media. Maybe the Government there doesn't allow US studios to enter the home media market or something similar. Here is an article I found on 4K UHD TV sales in China.

According to research from Business Insider Intelligence, China currently accounts for the overwhelming majority of all worldwide 4K TV shipments, some 78% for 2014 alone.

Furthermore, unlike the case in the market for smart TV, which is dominated by American, Korean and Japanese companies (all of which also produce top of the line 4K TVs), the current 4K TV market is dominated by Chinese manufacturers of more economical UHD sets.

However, this majority market share of all production is shared by a number of smaller Chinese manufacturers, and the individual companies that make the most recognized brands of 4K TVs are still majority players when compared on a standalone basis.

For example, the entire Chinese roster of 4K TV makers currently takes up 31.1% of the market while Sony alone holds 18.2% of all 4K TV sales. Samsung follows closely behind with an additional 14.9% of all UHD TV sales.

However, the bottom line remains: currently the widest and fastest adoption of 4K TV sets in homes is happening in China and is being guided by a number of major Chinese makers such as Hisense, Chang Hong and Seiki, which is actually headquartered in California.

If 4K TV sales are so high in China then the home media industry must also be booming.

Also lol at those Max Landis tweets. I never saw Chronicle but why did everyone involved in the film's making go on to become so insufferable?

MBJ is cool. Still hyped for Creed.

And awesome hold for The Gift! And congrats to Trainwreck to finally passing 100M!!

Nope, totally other (very fast growing / exploding numbers too) market, other rules of steering the market, partly other kind of programm / interest in TV-programm contents, other possibilties to influence/do business for foreigners...

They do watch a lot online... (I think I've read about 30%) but not via structures (term?) like you are used to.

That the foreigners (like US...) do not get their feet into that market doesn't mean there is no (even huge) market!

China has not an 'open' / non-governemtal regulated market like you are used to. It has not a free to access to all websites internet system, including no access to medical advice for reasons of 'pornografie' and so on. It is heavyly regulated and still full of illeagal content.

Here exists a China  subforum, very nice Chinese / Asian user's there who might be able to formulate it in a way no one misunderstands (I am still a bit shocked how a certain post by me could be misunderstood in such a way)
