CP is doing exactly the numbers it was projected to do. It only cost 55 Million....a low budget by today's standards...and Del Toro has enough of a following world wide so that Legendary (the film was totally finainced by Legendary;Universal is releasing it but declined to fund it) will get it's money back and likely make a modest profit.

Fact is Del Toro is a niche filmmaker who punched above his weight with "Pan's Laybrinth". He had his chance at a huge budget blockbuster with Pacific Rim and it did not work out at the box office. He can get his lower budget projects funded, but studios shy away from his big budget projects. And Del Toro is unrealistic in some of his demands. as with "At The Mountains Of Madness". No studio is going to fund a 200 Million dollar R rated horror movie. Even Lengendary, which has close relationship with Del Toro, is  declining that gamble.

And, btw, althought the Hellboy movies were fun, they are in the same universe as "Pan's Labyrinth", easily Del Toro's best work.

Universal must be happy they had Legendary fund Crimson Peak 100%. Universal gave Legendary stake in Jurassic World and the Furious franchise when they were trying to close the co-financing deal, in return Legendary has so far given them Seventh Son, Blackhat and Crimson Peak.

I think part of the reason why Universal agreed to Legendary's demands last year was that they had no major franchises, and then suddenly this year they figured out that they actually did and didn't need Pacific Rim to shore up their franchise chest.

It's worth seeing in IMAX 3D. I just think the marketing failed it.

The movie was doing all his money in IMAX, that is why this week's drop is so epic. It lost all the IMAX screens to Crimson Peak.

I think Mountains of Madness could good get made properly, just no way with Del Toro at the helm.

Del Toro has a huge amount of abandoned projects

Frankenstein - Never got past the scripting stage.

Hellboy 3 - Unless Del Toro wants to go small this may never see the film made. Adding insult to injury there is no serious demand for a third installment outside of its niche audience.

InSane - Video game he was developing, it all went south and never got made.

Silent Hills - Another video game he was working on, looks like it wont see the light of day ever.

At The Mountains of Madness - Insisted on a 200+ million dollar adaptation in 3D with Tom Cruise as the lead and a hard R rating. Universal was willing to make the movie for less with a different actor, like Bradley Cooper and James McAvoy, and keep the R rating. So...Project gets cancelled, Del Toro moved onto Pacific Rim and Universal put the money into other projects.

Justice League: Dark - Might still be in the works, but Del Toro's original game plan doesn't seem there anymore. Apparently he wanted Enchantress to be the villain but Warner Bros. put her in Suicide Squad instead, and David Ayer's interpretation is not exactly what Del Toro had in mind( At least to what I've heard).

Beauty and the Beast - Was attached to it and was set to direct with Emma Watson as Beauty, so what happened? Disney's announces their own adaptation based on their classic 1991 animated version with Bill Condon attached to direct and...It got put on hold( probably indefinitely), Del Toro drops out of directing and Emma Watson jumps ship to Disney's version to play Belle. It's currently filming and will be out in 2017.

Pinocchio - Probably not going to happen now, since the cast is no longer locked in and there hasn't been any further development. Also, another version of the story is being developed by a different studio with Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Downey Jr. involved, that'll probably decrease the chances of Del Toro's movie getting made even more.

The Haunted Mansion - Everything said has all just been wishful thinking, and little else. Ryan Gosling is attached to star...But for how long?

The Wind and The Willows - Wrote a few drafts and zilch has happened since.

Trollhunters - Originally planned as a feature film, now exists as a book he co-wrote.

Reboot/Remake of Rolad Dahl's The Witches - Wrote a few drafts, pretty much it.

Breaking Bad, "Ozymandias" - Wanted to direct, got close to direct, but the early bird caught the worm and Rian Johnson helmed it instead.

Disney's Double Dare You - A series of horror films designed to appeal to both kids and adults that went absolutely nowhere with only a logo designed and nothing else.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Wanted to make a westernized version of the classic story, never got anywhere to getting off the ground.

Creature From the Black Lagoon Remake - Was attached for a while back in the day, it didn't go anywhere at Universal.

Death: The High Cost of Living - Was involved for a while, project is dead as a doornail.

To be honest I don't think Del Toro is good enough to be as demanding as he is, and he's not even that demanding compared to some other directors. Haven't seen Crimson Peak yet, but the only film of his that I deemed more than a "decent matinee" was Pan's Labyrinth.

I guess hindsight is always 20/20 but as a big horror fan, the trailers for Crimson Peak interested me as much as seeing another Harry Potter film.  They looked kind of boring but beautiful to look at.  But the malevolent force in the house doesn't really look all that malevolent.  It just kind of looks like something that is friendly and kind of curious.  I have no desire to see this and it doesn't help that I think Del Toro is way more miss than he is hit when it comes to horror.
