Movies that use nostalgia: JW and SW7.

Movies that ignore nostalgia: FF and Jem.

I'm not saying all movies need to use nostalgia but it's the lifeblood of most franchises with an older fanbase.

Attracting the younger generation is more the lifeblood of most franchises, most blockbusters don't happen without huge teen/kid audiences. However, nostalgia is a very effective tool to lure that audience to an old franchise, because if it was beloved to the parents they want to introduce the kids. And then on top of that you get the older demo out in big numbers too, which is definitely something that doesn't happen with every blockbuster. Exactly what happened with JW and the PT.

I know we heard the pre-sales were 70% 18-50 males, but I'm sure a ton of those over 30 were guys buying 3-5 tickets for the whole family to go.

I thint it's pretty much a given if a movie helps the older fans recapture their childhood memories that the young audience will quickly understand the appeal.

Some of these stories and themes have timeless appeal that a child/teen of any generation can fall in love with.

That's why changing a proven formula is risky with nostalgia heavy franchises. You might alienate both the older and younger generation as they reject newer, untested elements that don't resonate.

Does Pan have enough juice left to get another $4.2m and pass the gross of Snakes on a Plane? I ask because if it finishes under SOAP it will break its 9-year record as the lowest-grossing release to open/play in over 3,500 theaters.

Though even if it doesn't finish behind Snakes, as long as it finishes under $43m it will be the lowest total *admissions* for an over-3,500 release...

On the bright side Pan only opened in 81 more theaters than Transporter Refueled and might make twice as much!

The Transporter Refueled EC $7,355,622 46.2% 3,434 $2,142 $15,936,806

There's a long and storied history of flops teasing a follow-up that will never happen.

buckaroosequel2.jpg

I find it so funny that this trend actually predates the modern would-be-franchise-mania by 20-30 years (including the occasional use of post-credit teasers!)

Don't remind me, I am still p.... that that one never happened

I wonder how little The Walk made this weekend, if Sony isn't even reporting an estimate...

Ever read, what BOM writes under every daily chart?

NOTE: If daily grosses stop for a movie, it means that the respective studio is no longer tracking it on a daily basis. The exceptions are New Line, Miramax/Dimension and Sony Pictures Classics. They don't do official daily box office, and estimates are made for their movies based on partial data in order to fill out the top 12. Because of this, movies from these studios are more apt to disappear from the daily chart.
