filmlover
I saw In the Heart of the Sea this evening. If WB moved it back because they actually thought they had an Oscar player on their hands, then lolz @ them.

I feel like Howard has had this "Oscar guy" perception attached to him for years, which is ironic since he really hasn't received that much recognition from them (only 2 BD noms and 3 BP noms I believe). Rush was a fantastic film and still couldn't make an awards season dent, so it truly is mind boggling how they thought Sea would. And they clearly must have to move it for no good reason to a week right before Star Wars.

And they clearly must have to move it for no good reason to a week right before Star Wars. I'm guessing the top executives saw the movie (it's been in the can for more than a year), knew the subpar reviews were coming, and decided to delay the inevitable for 9 months (really, this thing would've bombed no matter where it opened) to give it the chance to build at least some buzz as an Oscar contender (which never occurred, of course) before everything would pretty much doom it. They should've just released it in March because I can't imagine what executive thought that people would want to see...this...over the holidays anymore than they would've wanted to in the spring. One thing is for sure: between a number of costly bombs (Jupiter Ascending, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Pan, In the Heart of the Sea) and a bunch of titles that weren't big gambles but were still money losers anyway (Run All Night, Hot Pursuit, Entourage, Our Brand Is Crisis, etc.), not to mention a critically-adored hit that still lost money because it cost so much (Mad Max: Fury Road), a lot of people who work at WB are about to be out of a job in the beginning of the new year.

Blankments
Just think about it. Next week a movie 32 years in the making arrives. A sequel to the all time most popular trilogy of all time. Three heroes returning one more time, when no one expected it ever to happen. Star Wars: Episode VII I never dreamed it would happen in my life. Even with a year of trailers and two more years of hype. And, yet, next week at this time, I'll have already written my review for it. Crazy times we live in.

sfran43
Box Office: ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ Off to Rocky Start Ron Howard’s whaling drama “In the Heart of the Sea” has been scuttled, heading for a lackluster opening weekend of $11 million to $12 million at 3,103 U.S. locations, early estimates showed Friday. The fourth weekend of Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” could edge “In the Heart of the Sea” with early Friday tracking around $11 million to $12.5 million for a three-day total. Recent forecasts had projected that “In the Heart of the Sea” would take in $12 million to $14 million but Thursday night previews generated only $575,000 — underlining the marginal moviegoer interest in the poorly reviewed movie. The numbers are a clear disappointment, given a production budget around $100 million plus the star power of Chris Hemsworth. http://variety.com/2015/film/news/box-office-ron-howard-in-the-heart-of-the-sea-mockingjay-1201659486/
MovieMan89
Lord what a flop. With its drop next weekend it is bound to miss out on 40m DOM. 30m isn't even locked if it opens to 11.

At one point it seemed like George Lucas was resentful towards the prequel haters and was going to retire SW forever. Take Star Wars to the grave. Then one, fateful day, Lucas sold the rights to Disney. People weren't sure what to think. As we followed every development we tried to stay optimistic. It was all we could do. Then the trailers were released and the nostalgia was pure bliss. We then watched ticket sales "break the internet". It's been a wild ride. Now we're less than a week away. Feels good. See you, droids and bounty hunters on the other side.

filmlover
Another guarantee: no more eight figure salaries for Chris Hemsworth. Like, not even close. The grosses for his non-Marvel starring films don't justify those kind of paydays at all. Hollywood jumped the gun there but then, what else is new?

filmlover
LOL is there even going to be a Season 3 of True Detective? After how intense the backlash against the second season was (to the point that even Andy Samberg declared the show dead while hosting the Emmys) there has hardly been any discussion about it from either HBO or the creator. Luckily for The Huntsman, Hems will also have Charlize returning with Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt (tricking everyone into thinking she's playing Elsa) along for the ride.
