Top 10 grossing films per country (Excluding US/Canada)

Is that figure of 38.86m tickets sold in Australia for Gone with the Wind credible? It seems insanely high to me...

I often don't show as I'm not convinced either. However as far as I know from various sources it's way above 2nd place.

It is in Spanish, but you can insert the title in English of the film in the box that says "Título". The searcher uses to find the film with the info of admissions (item called "Espectadores") and gross in euros (item called "Recaudación"). Concerning the films you ask for, I have not found any info about Thunderball, but the others are there.

And Dr. No is in the top 150.

One curiosity about Gone with the wind: I have read it was released in 1950 in just 2 theaters, one in Madrid and other one in Barcelona. It was released during 1 year and it was able to sell 1 million admissions. When the film was showed on TV by the first time in 1986, it was seen by 20 million people, more than half of the population in that moment.

Hey Peludo, where do you live?

I did a quick comparison between the two lists and ticket prices in Japan seem really strange - Jurassic Park in 1993 had a ticket price of 1,500 Yen whereas Frozen in 2014 had a ticket price of 1,270 Yen. Then we have Jaws and Independence day which grossed 9 and 10.6 billion Yen respectively but sold less than 5m tickets so ticket prices would have been more than 2,000 Yen back in 1975 and 1996?

wikipedia says Titanic had 20,70 million admissions...

Relative to the prices, it has no sense as you well say. The average ticket price has no changed in last 20 years. And the average price in 1975 was a bit more than half than now. You can look at prices here (I do not know if data are correct. Is what I have found):

Romanians seem to like Jean Claude Van Damme films a lot, i counted several of his films in this list.

Keep posting these charts from your respective countries, as it gives a good insight into what cinematic icons click with different peoples from around the world.

THAILAND movies grossing >= $5m

Notes:

  • Reported numbers in THB and USD have some inconsistencies, especially of recent Disney movies (where the USD gross can be about 30% higher than local sources report.) For these entries, I decided to convert the local number to USD with the appropriate exchange rate.
  • The official Thailand BO counts only the two largest cities (Bangkok, Chiang Mai.) The nationwide BO numbers are rarely reported and should be around 1.6-2 times the official BO.
  • Local movies are in italic.

Rank Movie Year Gross
1 Pee Mak Phrakanong 2013 $19.50m

Can you comment on bo trends currently in Romania? Do action movies still overperform compared to western countries? Friends at a romanian distro say they still do well on old school actioners while in Poland we only watch the genre on TV (and there they get great numbers)

They do ok numbers, but nothing on that level. The only reason they were so big back then is because in Romania, till 2000, only 10 movies per year were released. But if we talk modern action movies (Point Break for example), they do well.

As for trends right now, the only sure fire winner is the fantasy/epic/mythology genre. I find it really hard to remember such a movie that flopped (Pompeii, Hercules, The Legend of Hercules, 300: RoE, The Last Witch Hunter, Noah, The Hobbit, POTC were all huge). Warcraft and Gods of Egypt will be huge this year. The Great Wall as well.

Big Sci-Fi spectacles are the second most liked, behind period epics. They do from decent to great (The Martian, Gravity, Interstellar, Jupiter Ascending, Star Wars).

Superhero movies are really not THAT popular here, compared to western countries. The big ones do around $1m, but never more.

Animations are hit and miss. Unless you are a megabrand (Minions, Ice Age, Hotel Transylvania, Madagascar), you won't do that big of a number.

Horrors always BOMB.

True story/dramas are usually quite successful (Everest, Bridge of Spies), while comedies are hit and miss (we usually have at least on huge comedy title every year).

YA adaptations also do well from time to time (THG, Maze Runner, Divergent series).

Thailand Top 20 in USD.

Note that this chart is not very accurate: numbers reported by BOM is about 10% higher than numbers from other sources, so I have added 10% to movies that don't have data on BOM (JW, AOU, Suriyotai) to have a general idea of the top 20.

Thailand Box Office Top 10 Year Gross (USD)
1. Pee Mak Prakanong 2013 19.70m
2. Furious 7 2015 13.18m
3. I Fine Thank You Love You 2014 10.08m
4. Transformers 3 2011 9.70m
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction 2014 9.61m
6. Jurassic World 2015 9.45m
7. The Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015 9.35m
8. Iron Man 3 2013 8.87m
9. Avatar 2009 8.41m
10. Suriyotai 2001 8.11m
11. The Avengers 2012 7.93m
12. King Naresuan 2 2007 7.22m
13. King Naresuan 1 2007 7.12m
14. Fast and Furious 6 2013 7.04m
15. King Naresuan 3 2011 6.79m
16. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 2011 6.71m
17. 2012 2009 6.43m
18. Breaking Dawn Part 2 2012 6.23m
19. King Naresuan 5 2014 6.14m
20. Spider-Man 3 2007 6.05m

I just checked BOM, and it does have numbers for AOU and JW which are little lower than the numbers here.

Then that makes me think the admissions data is incomplete then - if Jaws did 9b Yen in 1975 and average ticket prices were about 750 Yen then that would suggest about 12m admissions (unless Jaws was 2-3 times as expensive as the average film)?

Is that figure of 38.86m tickets sold in Australia for Gone with the Wind credible? It seems insanely high to me...

More insane when you find out it's more than five times the entire population of 1940 Australia which was 7m. :o

Don't forget though, that Gone with the Wind earnt it's takings over many, many, many years... to be honest you need only look at the number of admissions back when GWTW was released....

(straight from the Screen Australia Website - Link )

Total Admissions by Year:

(I can't find detail on #'s between 1932 and 1942)

1943 = 102m

1944 = 147m

1945 = 151m (Only year higher was 1928 but i'm not entirely convinced of that number either due to the way it was calculated)

1946 = 143m

1947 to 1953 ~ averages between 125m and 140m

i'm sure you get the picture and given Gone with the Wind would have been dominant film through many of those years it suddenly becomes more realistic that the 38m or so admissions sold for GWTW is real.  (FYI Australia population over the same period rose from 7.2m to 8.8m by 1953.  a lot of people were making multiple visits back then)

I should note that proper records were not kept before 1976 so some of these #'s were estimated too.  To give you an idea how far things fell away, by 1976 we had dropped to under 30m admissions in a year.  the highest point since then is 2001 / 2002 with around 92.5m (2010 came close with 92m Admissions)  I'm not sure how 2015 did but i am pretty sure it is still sub 90m Admission at this point (in $ it will be a record taking 2010's previous high).

Also FYI - Star Wars The Force Awakens has moved further up the all time Admissions chart to 8th which is where it will end up as I don't beleive it will have the legs to top 6m Admissions at this point (which should be around 91m AUD).
