The-Numbers from today

Before Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out there had only been one film to reach the $750 million milestone. That film was Avatar, and it took the film 253 days, and a late summer re-release, to get there. The Force Awakens reached the milestone in just 18 days. The latest Star Wars installment earned $8.02 million on Monday for a running tally of $750.23 million. Avatar finished with $760.51 million, a figure The Force Awakens will top in two days, at the most. Meanwhile, it should have no problem becoming the first film to ever hit $800 million domestically and will do so over the weekend.

that one I hadn't seen there before

If we look at A NEW HOPE, TITANIC, and AVATAR, though, all three were original movies. That carries a lot of weight, I think... perhaps enough that FORCE won't get the nom.

The Two Towers and Return of the King were not "original" movies, yet the former was nominated and the latter won. The Academy is more open to giving sequels nods these days. Toy Story 3 was nominated and historically sequels have gotten attention as well. I mean Godfather Part III(Yeah the THIRD one) was nominated.

Basically TFA has already passed Avatar if you don't count re releases.  I think the records should not count re releases, that's always bothered me, should be a separate record.

So the people who paid to see the special edition of Avatar didn't pay to see Avatar?  What about Titanic? E.T.? A New Hope? TPM? Lion King?  Jurassic Park?

When Michael Jordan came out of retirement to play for the Wizards, did his points count?  okokok, enough with the sports analogies!

As of Monday TFA has effectively a $131.3M cushion compared to Avatar gross to make $1B.

To put that in perspective. There are 87 days between now and March 31. If TFA was to make $1.5M below Avatar's daily gross all 87 days, it would hit $1B on 3/31.

FWIW, there are 27 days out of those 87 where Avatar didn't even make $1.5M for its daily gross. So there are 27 days during that period where it is physically impossible for TFA to make $1.5M less than Avatar.

That's just.. well... wow.

The LOTR movies were seen as one giant collective effort. Sure, GODFATHER III was nominated, but that had an incredible pedigree of acclaim before it -- far more than SW7 does. I'm not saying it doesn't have a chance -- I think it has a pretty decent chance, actually. But it's not a shoo-in, and the lack of a PGA nomination is a clear indicator of that (the PGA nominated both AVATAR and TREK in 2009).

I think today could increase. All theaters in my area are much busier than yesterday for SW. Screens were 20-30% full yesterday. Today they are 80-90% full.

It is 5 dollar Tuesday ... And almosy EVERYONE HERE usually waits to see movies on Tuesday. $1.00 popcorn plus a $5.00 movie... No beating that.

So TFA did 80% more OS than domestic yesterday. Is that a trend that holds for the weekdays or was yesterday an "international market" kind of thing (similar to how Christmas day was 40% bigger here that OS)?

I havent checked, but here the majority of our states here has school holidays till Wednesday

Plus in some regions / countries the cheap Tuesday is a cheap Monday (or even a cheap Monday and cheap Tuesday)

Still some countries on school holidays internationally on Monday, so not massively surprising.

By the way, AVATAR was still in cinemas when the special edition was released. it was more of an expansion that a re-release. Its silly to argue about it anyway as TFA is going to blow by it by 200mil, maybe more.

True enough, although since it had additional footage it's technically a different movie.

In regards to The Force Awakens potentially receiving a Best Pic nom at the Oscars, I think it's chances are pretty slim at this point. Speaking as an Oscar/awards nerd and follower, The Force Awakens didn't get a PGA nomination, which is a big hit against its chances as the PGA is arguably the most important precursor. If any group is likely to recognize big blockbusters like The Force Awakens, it's the PGA. So I'm pretty doubtful of it's chances at this point.

I'm not sure it would matter in terms of it's box office anyway, as the film has had an exceptional run so far.

Peace,

Mike

What i mean is its not a Titanic or Star Wars situation where the re-releases were years later,, AVATAR was still in cinemas.

It would be nice for the academy to take into avccount mega blockbusters and what us peons like to watch but TFA would never win anyway.

I never understood this "they should nominate a big mega-hit cause we spent money on it" thought. American Sniper made $350M. The Martian has made $226M. Mad Max made over $150M. They've nominated numerous other big hits since expanding the field.

It only made 20m from the re-release anyway, that's less than 1% of it's total.

On another note, here is a graph I made.

Yeah for sure. Its just the old thinking of how the blockbusters always used to get ignored and the $5mil grossing film would win, a filn no one saw.
