True, I was just looking at Avengers 3rd to 4th weekend drop and considering the fandom factor (i.e repeat viewership will be more concentrated on the weekend now that most people are back to work) for both movies and the similar RT ratings plus the lack of competition next weekend, I'm holding out for more

My concern is we have not seen if this is the leveling off point. We had a pretty bad Sunday hold followed by a very mediocre Monday. I think 1 billion is dead. An 8 mill hold puts us on course for a 38-40 mil weekend or a 55-58% drop. 

 

Also note, this is the Day that TFA and Avatar are equal. From here on out Avatar will be beating TFA each and everyday until the end of the run. 

 

TFA needs to level off like tomorrow to keep 1 bil a possibility. We see another 15%-20% drop tomorrow 1 bil is done and we need to start calculating if it can even reach 950mil (in a good scenario).

Lol well the midweek numbers were bound to fall. I think we knew that. I also think a $50-55M weekend is very likely. I would be surprised with much lower. I just don't think it's magically going to fall off a cliff and the Sunday hold from Saturday was very good - best in the top 10. The movie is going to keep chugging along.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Star Wars misses its third Century Mark, Still Sets Multiple Records with $90.24 Million

Over the weekend, the film broke the record for Biggest Domestic Hit of 2015, Fastest to $700 million, Biggest third weekend, and Biggest January weekend, in that order. Some of these records were really close. It topped American Sniper for the Biggest January record by less that $1 million (added: OW vs. 3rd WE). On the other hand, some of the records were completely destroyed. The film took just 16 days to reach $700 million, while it took the previous record-holder Avatar, 72 days.

As for further records, the film has already reached $750 million today, in just its 18th day of release, earning the Fastest to $750 million record, so it will quickly top Avatar for All-Time Domestic Box Office. After that, it will become the first film to reach $800 million domestically and likely $900 million domestically. $1 billion domestically seems out of reach, unless the film gets a re-release later on.

I doubt the Monday to Wednesday hold will be that good. I'm sure there were at least a few kids and workers that still had Monday off, that won't have Wednesday off.

 

If Monday was 8.000000 exactly, then Wednesday is likely to be down in the 6's.

With RotK daily numbers $8m Monday gives 8/7.2/6.48/5.9/13.1/23.1/14.7 for a $51m 4th weekend and with a continued following of RotK 1.029B final total.  This number is actually better than I expected, and increases the odds of reaching $1B.  Until this weekend following ROTK didn't break $1B now it does.

First Monday after holidays:

Avatar dropped a 53% relative to Sunday ($8.094m). It did $400m from this point.

ROTK dropped a 68% relative to Sunday ($2.228m). It did another $85m from now.

 

Avatar was a rarity, but following the same run than ROTK, TFA would make another $305m. Even considering that ROTK had a little boost because Oscars (nothing special), TFA still has a good margin to reach the billion, since it "just" needs another $250m, not 305.

 

For the moment, ROTK dropped a 49.6% the equivalent next weekend, so making those $45m that some people are saying would be enough, for the moment, to keep the ROTK run and guarantee the billion.

To me is, as I said since early into the release, especially interesting to see the Thursday actuals of this week, and also the Thursday actuals after MLK weekend

 

IMHO a typical non-December release block-buster pattern would mean a not so sharp change in direction, a bit curvy for ~ 2 weeks and than a bit smoother

Typical December release block-buster pattern (see Tolkien) would mean a sharp/abrupt change of direction starting ~ yesterday/this week's weekdays, with a chance of a little bit of late legs.

 

Or an own pattern

 

And I am really really curious how The-Numbers will react to the breaking of the $800m mark on their graphic chart, as they so... stoutly ignore results after day 125, even if considerable.
