Sorry, what exactly is 'the third movie treatment'?

The opening weekend drops from the last movie or the entire franchise. Examples:Expendables 3, Rush Hour 3, Mission Impossible 3, Beverly Hills Cop III, Matrix Revolutions, Hangover Part III just to name a few. The third movie also drops from all of the other past predcessors in terms of attendance or unadjusted. Examples of those are the one listed above and many more. Release dates do not matter.

By flopping, I mean by producing disappointing box office results regardless of budget or marketing costs. It received wonderful reviews, but the public gave it little attention, thus it only grossed a small $25 million domestically. A similar type of film with a small budget, wonderful reviews and an unknown studio is District 9, which earned way more than Ex-Machina with $115 million domestically in 2009.

Might be also due to the fact that Ex Machina opened limited at first and when it was given a widerish release it was barely advertised.

District 9 had great marketing.

Just heard a radio spot for "The Choice" which said "From the author of The Notebook and Safe Haven". Safe Haven is the second best movie in the Sparks filmography?

Maybe not best (wouldn't know haven't seen any) but I think its probably the second most recognized for sure

Get on it. The first is a really good movie, the second retreads a lot of what people liked in the first one.

Eh. I'm very indifferent towards the first movie, love the second movie for adding a lot of new stuff that the first film totally lacked. Third movie was alright, but closer to the mediocre first movie compared to the exemplary second movie

Tele, watch KFP2 and you'll be good.

A Walk to Remember is definitely more recognized than Safe Haven.

I think they just mentioned Safe Haven because it's the highest grossing Sparks movie of the past 5 years.

KFP3 made me think about being step father, seeking out my own father, and why we should teach kids to discover themselves (instead of teaching them to follow a specific path).

Sure I might have been reading too much into it but where's the crime in getting more mileage out of something when you can?

District 9 also had an action element that Ex Machina didn't; it's easier to sell a cerebral sci-fi film with explosions than without.
