Getting things to look very good and seamless might matter more than the wow factor.

dxmatrixdt
Have we come up with the full reason of why Ex Machina won the award? Did any of the voters come out and give the reasons for this? Ex Machina won the majority vote!!!! Do you think there was talk amongst the voters to vote for the intellectual underdog (Ex Machina) to make a Hollywood political statement. If you love to predict who wins these awards, we need to figure out why this movie won and what it means for the future. As of today, I saw Fantastic Beasts and I think it has better effects than any of the summer blockbusters... SO FAR) 1. Dr. Strange 2. Jungle Book 3. Fantastic Beasts 4. Rogue One 5. (another December film) Arrival, Civil War, Pete's Dragon, The BFG
Jake Gittes
Maybe Mad Max and TFA split the big flashy VFX extravaganza vote and Ex Machina got ahead with how impressive and thought-through it looked on such a low budget. It's harder for me to believe in the idea that big chunks of voters get together before the Oscars to decide what they're gonna vote for. Don't think it was any kind of a statement. SLAM!
After seeing Doctor Strange yesterday, I think it stands a great chance!
Fancyarcher
I think The Jungle Book has the win down, unless Rogue One somehow impresses even more with it's visual effects.
The Panda
Jungle Book deserves the win, no blockbuster topped its effects. But it has tough competition with Arrival and Passengers (academy seems to favor original movies for this award) 1.The Jungle Book 2.Arrival 3.Passengers 4.Doctor Strange 5.Rogue One I'm rather confident about those being the noms. WrathOfHan
After seeing Arrival today, I think it's going to win here. The effects fit the movie great. As for the fifth spot, I'm going with Sully for now.

Right...this time they weren't fear inducing and the river scene alone is boss. But out of these i'd be surprised if Warcraft wasn't even nominated. It was totally beautiful. AniNate
Arrival had some really nice practical effects but its alien designs are pretty drab and generic, so I don't think it should win despite loving the movie
Impact
Whoa-Kubo is listed, well Nightmare Before Christmas was nominated.

Impact
Predictions: Arrival Dr. Strange Fantastic Beasts Jungle Book Rouge One I had kind of a hard time getting 5 films, I could see Arrival getting snubbed by Passengers or even a small chance Star Wars misses it if the Academy does not feel like having 3 Disney films there for whatever dumb reasoning. (I could also see Deepwater getting nominated) Now if the Academy felt like trolling the internet: Alice 2 BVS ID4 Suicide Squad Warcraft Not saying any of these had bad visuals, but knowing the internet they might get a little upset (okay maybe not about Warcraft, needed a 5th film listed though, and some people forget that this is about visuals not quality of the film-I have noted numerous times some rather strange ones that have gotten nominated over the years)

WrathOfHan
I'm going with Kubo for the fifth spot. I don't think any of the other contenders are strong enough to knock Rogue One out of its nomination.
