I've already seen two 2012 movies I really liked (The Grey and Tim and Eric). Are you guys telling me that if I see this, that will turn into three?

I'm not sure. I loved it, so generally that means that you will hate it. :P

I liked it a lot. The story was good. The acting was fine. The effects were good enough. The only reason I didn't like it more was the documentary style of using Andrew's camera shots for 90% of the film. It's just personal preference.

Saw it liked it but other than original take on the matter there wasn't anything original in particular regarding the story or characters As soon as Andrew flips the car with the dude in it you know he's gonna go too far with his power ... black guy dies first ( who saw that coming ) ... someone mentioned Akira and now that I think of it this movie was HEAVILY both influenced by it and borrowed stuff from it Don't get me wrong I liked it but predictability was not what I was expecting in the second half which is supposed to be the stronger one ... and predictability was all I've got District 9 is still the king of this type of sci fi documentary/found footage like stuff Oh yeah that reminds me ... film really forgot about the 'all filmed on camera by other people' stuff when final fight was going on ... All in all 7/10 But only worth watching once

B. Not my kind of movie (teen boy dynamics are my no1curr) and yet...It started off slow. I never liked Andrew. I think all the actors did fine but i'm wondering if Andrew actor couldn't have done more to make me care. I mean his life really sucked and yet I felt nothing for him. I laughed mostly every time he was bullied but maybe i'm just a sucky person  .Anyway once they got their powers the movie actually became funny and interesting beyond anything I imagined. Of course I have some issues with them going down into the hole in the first place. I mean have they never read Stephen King? Never seen horror movies? Beyond belief tbh.But whatever, they did it and that's fine. But then I start to ask myself where this movie is going. I'd actually have preferred if they used their powers to become off beat superheros but alas it was not to be. Of course Andrew had to go off the tracks, poor Steve had to die, there had to be a no1curr relationship with Matt and that blonde (seriously, who cared?), the flying looked so bad/weird and then the movie completely derailed for me in the end. Every scene after Andrew went to the hospital was a mess for me.So basically the beginning and the end were hot mess central but when the movie was good in the middle it was very, very good.

It's better than it could have been, and has some moments that surprisingly work well. Kudos for trying to add a little more depth, and the alcoholic dad angle just barely works. Still, I thought the hand-held camera aspect served as a hindrance, and the emo high school angle was laughable, particularly the party scene. Grow some balls and stop acting like a vagina, IMO.Still, not bad.B-

i was awfully surprised by how good this was, very tight editing makes this one very unique adrenaline rush. i've only seen five movies from last year but this is sitting at the top atm, above dark knight rises, hunger games, avengers, and the hobbit.

i just rewatched it, and...

it's still damn good. another 2012 film that explores the alpha-beta dynamic of male socialisation. the sci-fi aspects are suitably kept in the background, the CGI is economical, and many of the main trio's conversations and mannerisms are greatly reminiscent of the nerdboy 'friends' i used to circle with. not great though: some of the 'thematic' dialogue is a bit obvious, and the found footage aesthetic will always have pros and cons. original score of 8.0.

6.5/10

How convenient is it that the main character just happens to get a camera right before two of the other characters find the weird hole?

The film is great when it comes to it's main character and his character development but the other two characters? The character development could have been better. Note how Matt Garrety's relationship with that girl sorta just ends. No pay-off. Steve doesn't really have an arc and it's weird that the film has that big fight with Andrew towards the end: maybe we if saw them as friends when they weren't using powers, it could have worked better.
