I mentioned cinematography because it was easily the best I've seen for any movie this year.

I think Tarzan suffered by coming out right after Jungle Book and people weren't as blown away as they would have been.  at least, I never saw Jungle Book and I agree about the cinematography.  I also think it was an overall entertaining movie.

Is there likely in the real world ever going to be the kind of data that would change your mind though?  It would in fact take something very clear cut to make me think Jen isn't a draw, since I know for a fact she draws me and others like me.  I admit the bias, but I'm also a data point, however anecdotal. I am not sure the two sides are going to meet, even acting in good faith.  We might eventually just agree to disagree.

Fair point, but over time it will be easier to form a general consensus one way or another. Right now opinions/biases rule on those 2 due to lack of stand alone films they've been in. It is largely a speculative discussion.

With J. Law, she's had success in three things in the past five years: Hunger Games, X-Men, and David O. Russell films. Problem is everything outside of those haven't done well and now Hunger Games are done, David O. Russell has stalled and she looks bored with X-Men.

Outside of that? How much has there been outside of that since she became popular?

I agree Passengers will be her first tent pole movie not based on EITHER a franchise or a movie DOR directed.  I'm just not sure that means anything.

I will say, having  watched the trailer, that she doesn't seem bored in Passengers.  And that is pretty clearly being marketed on the strength of its stars:  Jennifer Lawrence; Chris Pratt; the ship.

This is why it's a legit discussion. Well said.

The House at the End of the Street and Serena were J. Law flicks that were released in that time period and fit none of the key criteria.

Serena was basically direct to VOD with a smattering  of theaters because of a director/producer divide on what the movie should be and House at the end of the street only ever came out because she got popular, it was shelved after it was filmed years before. I think it has been said a number of times on this thread that no actor is going to make a blockbuster out of an acknowledged stinker.

The thing is, different people come into this discussion but the points are the same.  I agree there isn't data to 'prove' she is a draw, but I also believe she is a draw (and that Pratt is), and believe Passengers will help to demonstrate that.

Passengers will be a test for both Lawrence and Pratt, can't really say it will. And Sci-Fi Romance is a tricky genre.

And still remains the least profitable.

Sony has already erased the movie from existence

Quote

Exclaimed Sony’s worldwide marketing and distribution chief Josh Greenstein on Sunday AM about Magnificent Seven, “Sony is on a very hot run of profitable movies between The Angry Birds Movie, The Shallows, Sausage Party, Don’t Breathe and now Magnificent Seven is another great win for us. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt are an incredible winning combination, and we’re in business with them moving forward in the future with Chris on Passengers and Denzel on Inner City. Antoine did a great job, putting his signature stamp on this film and making it the biggest opening of his career.”

Which is a pretty damn impressive CV if you ask me. Sure I get the point that these movies were drawing people in the theaters with or tihout Jlaw but just look at how many people have her as their avatar on this forum, I'm pretty sure no actress has as much avatar love in here. That's love. And when a actor/actress is loved, he/she's a draw.
