I can't actually remember the last time I left the theater thinking yeah I had a good time

I actually somehow agree with you. Not completely, but the experiences were I got out being mindblown were very few. It happened with FB yesterday, with The Hobbit and Interstellar. And that's about it. I find more and more that movies that stick with me are either small ones I watch at home. It's partially called being a pretentious fuck, but i don't mind lol.

I can honestly say as you get older you become more skeptical. At least that's what I'm experiencing when I see a film esp blockbusters. There's so much hype on everything especially when you are a fan and use forums like these. I can't remember the last time my feeling was "holy shit that blew me away." It's sad that's my experience right now but my appreciation for truly great films of the past increases.

tbh, a lot of times the marketing campaigns and release patterns aren't nearly the same as for tentpoles.

I get it -- the studios don't want to spend a fortune. But it's hardly an equal playing field.

Wasn't Sully successful in September with almost $125m domestic and likely a $75-80m OS total? The Accountant also did well for what was an average film. We have had mid budget films be successful at the box office just not making blockbuster money but they're not expected to make blockbuster money.

Everyone loves to say they are blockbustered out, but then great mid-range stuff like The Nice Guys, Arrival, Popstar, Allied, Bridge of Spies, Ex Machina and many others come out and people half ass support them.

To be fair Allied hasn't been released yet. It probably won't do break great business, but putting it on that list, when all the other listed films have been released, is a bit "jumping the gunish".

Goddammit have I become an old man? Is that what this is?

Should have embraced the power of Star Trek Beyond like I did.

It is the only blockbuster to give me true joy this year. Be more Asian like me.

Also saw Fantastic Beasts and I really enjoyed it. It took a while to get going, but once it did I was really caught up in the Potter Universe again. My favorite character / performance was probably Dan Fogelman, who was really good as the human bystander who eventually gets involved in all of the madness.

Everybody should check out The Handmaiden. Very strong period piece drama with some fun twists by the director of Old Boy, and interesting presentations of various soft-to-moderate pornography both explicit and implicit. Fifty Shades of Whatever sucks in comparison. Along with Train to Busan and The Wailing, the Koreans have had some great stuff this year.

Or wait for your next boring blockbuster.

There are a shit ton of fantastic movies to see these days and more to come very soon, not sure what some of you are missing, probably not aware of those movies.

This discussion is more on big budget blockbusters, clearly there are a lot of good films each year.

It's also the online critical consensus that every movie is either the "best ever" or "worst ever". Rotten Tomatoes has made it even worse with the aggregation, forcing reviews which discuss movies in-depth to become either fresh or rotten. The binary thinking has made discussion of movies itself suffer.

Also, the theatrical window shrinking, prices increasing and the convenience of renting a movie on like a million VOD platforms has led to a lot of people staying home and deciding "I can wait 3 months to see that on VOD"

Since we are here, you know what's funny? The best movie I've seen in the past 2-3 years was 2013 DTV movie with only 2 characters and the most brilliant dialogue I've ever had the pleasure to witness (curiously enough, I just now realize one of them was Dan Fogler).

Seriously, I can't recommend this movie enough. Has anyone else seen it?

I mean I thought Civil War and Star Trek Beyond were pretty good. I guess my third favorite was... Batman v Superman? Jesus.

And GODS OF EGYPT doesn't count, it's not a blockbuster it's an art film

I loved Alison Sudol as Queenie, I wasn't as keen on Tina because she was more uptight.

I think having Jacob as the audience surrogate worked, it was great to see an No-Maj adult introduced to this world.

The issue also now is the incessant fan wars and trolling. I have just stopped going into any DC or Marvel threads altogether. The threads are unreadable due to strong opinions.
