Live by Night is probably gonna make less in total than Runner Runner did at this point. Yikes. Ben will be fine, though.

Warner Bros.’ Ben Affleck 1920s gangster movie Live By Night goes from 4 New York and Los Angeles locations to 2,822. Pic held Thursday night previews, and according to industry estimates–not Warner Bros.–pic did roughly $325K which is 24% of the business that The Accountant posted on its first Thursday with $1.35M (that pic put up a $9.1M first day and $24.7M opening).

That ratio would mean about $6.1m opening - or a bit more with the Sodt Sunday drop...

In one of the most crowded MLK weekends in years,....

Patriots Day ..expanding from seven... to 3,120 theaters today grossed $560K from 2,000 venues that started showtimes at 7PM.

.... Tracking earlier this week had Patriots Day in line for a $20M-$22M opening, in a fight for No. 1 ....

Hidden Figures blasts from 2,471 sites to 3,286 today.

La La Land -even before its weekend expansion from 1,515 sites to 1,848- was No. 2 yesterday with an estimated $1.8M taking its five week total to $59.6M.

La La Land -even before its weekend expansion from 1,515 sites to 1,848...

Sleepless drew $410K last night. ...Granted, Sleepless is much cheaper at $30M. Tracking earlier this week had the opening for the Foxx film between $7M-$8M at 1,800 locations.

The Bye Bye Man drew $400K last night,....Production cost for this pic directed by Stacy Title is at $7.4M with STX having limited exposure as they co-financed with the Los Angeles Media Fund.

Live By Night goes from 4 ... locations to 2,822. Pic held Thursday night previews, but we haven’t seen them yet. Tracking has the $65M budgeted production –Affleck’s biggest as director– opening at $10M stateside. Pic is also going out in a number of foreign territories this weekend including Russia and the U.K.

Theaters are going to be VERY eager to drop this weekend's releases soon. Lion might be able to get 1,500 theaters in the near future, Moonlight will continue to expand starting this weekend, and Manchester, Hacksaw, and maybe even Nocturnal Animals if it gets nominated can get one final push before they release on digital and Blu.

Yup. It's sad that these new releases had no chance to breathe.

Sleepless is in only 1803 theaters and it will beat Ben. Fucking hell.

Tricky genre, poor reviews, a muted and unpersuasive marketing campaign, a boatload of competition, and a rather dismal performance in limited release. The writing was on the wall, pretty much.

This is to all the people worrying that torrenting is hurting the industry. It's doing fine.

It's more a question of what types of movies are being hurt, and also the long-term stability of high ticket prices and even higher budgets on blockbusters.

Absolutely, I agree that smaller films are disproportionately hurt by it. However, the piracy thread (to me at least) seemed to talk about big films and the industry as a whole. Like how if everyone who torrented Furious 7 paid to see the movie, it would have made even more money.
