‘Kong: Skull Island’ Conquering ‘Logan’ For Top Spot At B.O. With $53M – Midday Update

2ND Update Midday: Warner Bros./Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island is floating toward a $20M Friday –that’s 37% better Pacific Rim‘s first day ($14.6M) and $500K shy of San Andreas ($20.5M) — which points the monster pic toward an opening weekend of $53M. That’s based off of non-Warner Bros. reported matinee projections.

HOLY SHIT if true. This March is one for the record books.

That would be a kinda sad drop for Logan :( deserves more

Did literally everyone forget that Logan lost IMAX and most PLF screens this weekend? IMAX contributed 11M or almost 13% of Logan's OW with PLF screens definitely adding about the same as well. Losing those big ticket screens would definitely hurt any movie.

Woah! Fantastic number! I was only hoping for Tarzan like performance but 55M (assuming deadline is low as always) would be awesome!!!!!

Yeah, I was thinking The Legend of Tarzan was the best comparison here: everyone expects this film to completely flop in the days beforehand, only for it to open well, and find the audience it was looking for.

Legendary financed 25% of the budget of JW, Universal did that as part of the deal when they signed with them, Universal doesn't need them for the sequel as they can take on more of the risk or use another financier like Perfect World

Oh.. interesting..

And don't take Deadline's report too seriously. Their Kong at 53m and Logan at 35m is based on matinees. Last week Logan was underestimated with 72m projection.

Legend of Tarzan still flopped and lost money though, it just had better than expected legs. Not sure why everyone keeps bringing up its performance, as beating expectations.

It's barely noon on the West Coast, so we'll see, but anything over 50 would be a big win for Kong IMO. Decent reception and playing to an older audience means it could leg to 135, which is not bad for another King Kong movie in 2017.

True, but what makes it so exciting is that Deadline tends to underpredict by a noticeable margin.  If 53M for Kong is an underprediction, then that's great.
