MCU should just do two movies a year. When you release 3 or 4 movies in a year people will get burned out. Black widow, Shang Chi, Eternals and no way home all came out within six months. Give the audience enough time to build up an appetite again.

Yeah MCU films don't feel like "events" anymore

The only one that opened significantly higher than its predecessor was MoM, and that’s largely because it came off the heels of NWH.

Well Thor 4 opened almost 20% higher then Thor 3, which is pretty sizable considering how long Thor has been around at this point. Quantumania was up almost 40% which is pretty big.

Not to mention these both (especially antman) had to deal with bad reviews before they even opened, causing a lot of hype to die before people even got to see it. Both had the potential for even higher openings

They also each came out nearly five years after their predecessors, so tickets were more expensive.

3 movies a year is fine alongside 2 shows (most of the GA don´t watch shows either). Which is also reportedly their target output. It became def too much, and agree with the event feeling is gone. Also the quality will most likely be stronger.

Re opening bigger:

Thor and Ant-Man had hype based on previous entries and event factor etc, Vol 3 doesn´have anything of that and is coming of a horrible 2022 and Ant-Man 3.  I´m not surprised that the tracking is bad, just surprised of how bad. Many might just wait for D+ or reviews and some might not return ever. Marvel has lost the trust of the audiences. Let´s see if they can gain it back during the next years

If GOTG opens a bunch lower then last I'm guessing it's more about the quality of recent marvel films then people being just tired of marvel.

It can be a mix, but can be that people are just sick of bad superhero movies rather than the movies in general. After all we just had two of six superhero movies being well received IN 2022 and already has two not well received this year. The three next movies in the genre will be a big test. If they do bad despite being received well (presumably) then it´s hard to argue against it but it´s to early to make conclude with that imo.

People keep saying that tracking has been disappointing. Is it really looking that bad?? Kinda surprised honestly, I know that recent Marvel movies have been subpar to the average moviegoer, but GOTG are some of the most popular characters left in Marvel and this is supposed to be the final one

When people are trying to pretend opening with 130M is a massive success and middle finger to the haters, you already know that the movie is a failure. With a 130M opening it will be require unusually good legs to finish with 800M WW. In another words vol 3 will need miraculous performances just to still gross less than vol 2. How the heck is that not a disaster for Disney and Marvel?

As you said vol 3 is like one of the last silver bullets Marvel has left, the other one being Deadpool 3. Once Marvel has fired those bullets it's going to get harder and harder to keep the hype of phase 5 and 6 alive.

They also have Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-men.

They're releasing a lot of sequels lately. Here's some of my recent (not adjusted by inflation) charts and table.

Table (click to enlarge😞

Pre-pandemic, the average domestic MCU first weekend multiplier was 2.81 with movies obtaining 90% of their gross in 30 days.

Since the pandemic and the launch of Disney+, the average domestic MCU first weekend multiplier is 2.47 with movies obtaining 90% of their gross in 28 days.

I think the "mistake" here was believing that the success in 2017-2019 was due to a growing appetite for more secondary - if not lower! - character & content, and not recognizing that was (apparently) largely a halo effect due to the underlying anticipation for the conclusion of the main Avengers series. That's when they flipped from 2 movies a year, the annual early May slot and then either July or November release, to a 3/year rotation. Do those extra release of Homecoming, Ragnarok, Far From Home, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel make nearly as much if not part of the Infinity War/Endgame build-up?

Post-Endgame, the volume of content ballooned, but without a new big story as a driving force, demand waned and became spread thin. Then quality fell off, and now some people appear to have just started to check out.

Individual films might be huge hits, but I don't think the MCU will ever be the huge thing it was in the Infinity Saga again.

Audiences have just sort of gotten burned out on it. It was inevitable for that to happen. Maevewl studios could not keep scoring hits every time it was up  at bat forever.

I am not expeciting the hard core fanboys to accept that, though.

Tracking is not that bad, but it is less then what you would expect fo ra GOTG movie.

I think they can probably get away with 3 but they really need to be spaced out better.
