Deadline reports Colossal is looking at weekend average of $30K from 4 theaters and that Gifted is looking to make $500K from 56 theaters for the weekend (or a theater average of around $9K).

What is happening at Fox Searchlight? I would assume they're in the midst of an identity crisis as other studios (in particular, A24) have come along to steal their thunder.

Not sure how Gofted gets 500k from that Friday. If say closer to 400 to be honest.

Also really hoping your name has legs through the weekend and hits 2N. Their finest looking at a 15-18k average

Eh, there's big difference between 4 (which can mean 8-12 screens in the largest most expensive venues) and 56 theaters.  That's a solid number for Gifted and like Matrix, about what I expected.

Lion opened with a 30k in 4 and by it's 3rd w/e was doing 11k in 15  for a running total of 490k.  Now this doesn't have an Awards push momentum (and was never positioned as such by Searchlight unlike Jackie Birth of a Nation)  but it has an OK chance to perform solidly as  GA pic when it expands on Wed similar to Zookeeper's Wife.

They honestly should've just opened Gifted wide right off the bat and not even bothered with a limited launch.

Well that usually  requires far more P&A.  This movie cost $9m BEFORE the Georgia tax credit and studios like to spend less when they pay less.   They mostly used the free screenings and Evans and Co as publicity and to build WOM.

They had it planned for an even slower roll out.  Just a  week ago they were saying it would expand to 50 theaters on the 14th and go wide on the 21st.  I wonder how they were able to change their local marketing around that quickly.

Focus changed it's plans late on Zookeeper's Wife as well.  It was supposed to go wide the first week, then they said 300 theaters, then it became 500 theaters and now in the 2nd weekend it's wide again.

I think the recent high profile duds opened the market place a bit and altered all their plans.

They probably figured a slow rollout was pointless given the only alright reviews. Although FSL doesn't seem to be in the best shape these days, they haven't had an actual box office or awards season success since Brooklyn almost a year and a half ago.

That only means they missed one Awards season.  They banked heavily  on Birth of a Nation and that was a disaster and then did a late pickup on Jackie which got some but not a lot of Awards traction.

More telling is they only released 5 movies last year and Jackie was a late pick up.   By far the lowest in the last decade, over the last few years they've released at least 8.
