The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Heh.

The real reason I didn't track Inc 2 wasn't because of it's potential OW.  I think it'll do around 150 OW, if not more if all the stars align.   It's that it was an animation film and even with higher presales relative for the genre, I figured it wouldn't have been worth it to track it until close to release.  Say, 10 days or so.

That and I was kinda burnt out after the IW-Solo-DP2 trifecta and didn't want to do another double dip of tracking with FK on the horizon. :)

Yeah that's fair enough, most people would expect far out that FK would do more presales than I2.

Regardless, what kinda presales are I2 looking at at your theatres? Even if it's just a rough eye-balling. No worries if you can't :)

Incredibles 2 didn't increase from its original tracking. I do wonder if tracking services being burned by Solo and overestimating DP2 slightly, has them being more cautious with how they're predicting what these bigger movies will do.

I had I2 at around $140M-$145M but I think I'm gonna up it to $150M-155M based on how sales have picked up in my area.

Just glancing at the best theater in town (Century Arden), it's doing fairly well.  About the equivalent of two-and-a-half to three rows left for the non-3D showings from 5pm to 9pm and a healthy amount of sales for the 10pm and 11pm showings.  The lone 3D showing (6pm) has about three and a half rows left.

Checked out some of the other heavy hitters locally and it's doing fairly well in those locations as well, if not, ahem, incredible. :)

That's excellent to hear! Especially that late evening showings are healthy too.

Finding Dory‘s $135M opening, which is by all accounts, the current domestic record for animated pic’s opening.

This is worded like there's some debate about this.  Is there?

Scanning the theatres I regularly do In Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa, I2 not only looks strong, but also looks crazy strong for late-night shows. The 9;00 and 10;00 shows are already relatively full,  which is something I can't say about movies like Coco or Despicable Me 3.

I really wouldn't be surprised with previews in the low teens for this one.

My theater as of Monday 5:20 EST

Incredibles 2 1402 3366 31.31%

Comps:

153% of Thor: Ragnarok ($188.5M)

99% of Justice League ($93.7M)

393% of Coco ($199.5M)

1078% of Ferdinand ($144.5M)

916% of Paddington 2 ($100.8M)

413% of Peter Rabbit ($103.4M)

130% of Solo ($109.7M)

Wow. And there's still three days left, and its showtimes aren't finalized.

Also, Superfly only has its Wednesday shows up. Sold about 49 tickets on that day so far.

Incredibles 2 1892 4386 43.14%
Superfly 105 1420 7.39%
Tag 16 1294 1.24%

I'm not gonna do any comps right now, because it's already midnight here, and I wanna go to bed, but I can say this:

Incredibles 2 beat out Deadpool 2 in terms of tickets sold and is now only behind Last Jedi, Black Panther, and Infinity War. It obviously won't break the 4,000 barrier like those movies did, but it's still very noteworthy. 80% of all Friday seats across every showtime has been sold, with just about every showtime having great numbers, even up to the late night shows. Saturday and Sunday aren't as amazing, but they're doing well too, selling 38% and 33% respectively.

Superfly had its other days added in yesterday, so not much traction has been shown on those days, with Saturday taking up about 70% of all the tickets sold, but it's still too early to call it a bomb. I'll probably look into it more in the morning before Superfly starts its first showtime.

Tag's only real business is one Sunday showtime, with about 13 out of the 16 sold there. Again, still very early.

At some point in the last week plus, JW2 was added to two more theaters locally.  One of them is non-reserved and thus not being tracked on the seat counter (though it is on the showings counter).  The other is a reserved seating theater with six showings.  It had 718 more reserved seats added and... 26 seats sold at the time I caught it.  These numbers will be in a separate section below for today ONLY.

Given that only 26 out of 718 seats had been sold when I caught it and 5 more were sold when I re-checked it a couple of hours later, it's entirely possible that tickets have only been on sale at these two locations for a couple of days.  Perhaps no more than three or four.

The one that isn't reserved is kinda on the low end of the market locally so no real loss there.   The one that is reserved I'd call in the upper end of the mid-tier of good theaters in town.  Not the best, but not the worst.  Usually sells a decent amount of tickets at the location, so for only 26 tickets to have been sold over six screenings AND 5 more within a couple of hours later really does suggest to me that this is a late-ish addition and people in town are just finding out about it.

Either that, or I just got lucky and saw five tickets go on sale soon after they were sold.
