The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Lion King previews AMC Empire 25 is now showing 4 2D shows as sold out while 2 Dolby shows are almost sold out. I think its PS is building nicely. in SF its sold good amount of tickets though its far from selling out. But it has ginormous number of shows for its previews. if PS builds up nicely in final week I could see it hit 20m+ for previews.

So I was starting out my comps, and I just realized that one of the theaters I was tracking was not in PA, but all the way in Michigan. It wasn't my fault, because both theaters share the exact same name (don't ask me why), but it still sucks. And wouldn't you know it, it completely screws up all the work I've done so far. To quote the star of Show Dogs, I made a huge mistake.

So basically I'll have one adjusted comp that excludes the messed up theater, and then I'll add in the new theater into the mix.

Ignoring that theater confusion for a moment, this was a fantastic day for the theaters I'm tracking. It's above even Tuesday, which was a huge promo day for TLK. Obviously part of that jump was also due to the fact that the 4th of July weekend is over, but that's still really dang good. Hopefully that momentum continues, and this isn't some crazy overperformance.

It's a good thing I added this theater into the mix. Not just because of my Michigan Mishap, but also because the new theater I added has sold a lot of tickets. 305 in fact. It at least shows there's still a lot of demand being met here, and skews things a bit more positively...at least, I think so? I dunno, the more theaters to sample, the better.

So folks might be wondering:  Just how is Hobbs and Shaw doing locally?

Glad you asked!  Let me answer the question this way.

The 7pm showing of H&S at Century Arden has sold 36 out of 161 tickets.  Not ideal, but not terrible.

The other 44 showings in the region that have reserved seating?  77 tickets (out of 6266).

That's right. 1 showing out of 45 (reserved seating) showings accounts for 31.86% of sales locally.

Yessssh.

===

Also, today H&S sold nine whole tickets in the region.  That might seem kinda low, but it actually ties it for the second best day of pre-sales.

A frontloaded flick on pre-sales, this movie ain't.

Inspired by @Porthos, I did a VERY VERY VERY rough estimate of how many tickets would need to be sold in my area to get 18M and 20M for previews. I used the comps of other trackers, and compared how FFH sold in my area to their areas. I adjusted for seat count and all that fun jazz. But this doesn’t have much data to go off of, and has some sketchy calculations. So, I’ll probably be very wrong, but why the heck not?

18M: 7400 tickets

20M: 8200 tickets

Preparing myself to see the meltdowns when TLK opens with only $ 180 - 200M and not with $ 230 - 250M

Anyway, promising numbers overall, if next week delivers on presales i think +20M previews is happening

Tickets Available: 709668

Estimated ATP: 10.84

Estimated total sales: 362695 (80% of Friday)

Estimated nationwide sales: 3.3 million

TLK Sunday presales:

Theaters: 230

Showings: 4939

Tickets Sold: 18226 (54% of Saturday)

Tickets Available: 693278

Estimated ATP: 10.17

Estimated total sales: 185365 (51% of Saturday)

Based on the 4-day data, I estimate that TLK's total domestic presales for all days are around 15 million at this point in time, with 14 million of that being for the OW.
