The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Probably it will become more interesting in the next weeks with bigger films (Crawl, Stuber, The Lion King) and when comps and other genres are added.

I know that other reports in that thread are way more important but nevertheless please tell me if other theater(s) e.g. in NY or LA would be more representative. So far it's only a sort of test.

So I'm doing my nightly ticket checks, and out of curiosity, I decided to look at OUATIH and see if presales were up. But what's interesting is that there are no Thursday preview showtimes up yet. It starts at Friday. Granted there's only two theaters up so far, so it'll probably be updated, but if there's really no Thursday previews, that's gotta be one of the strangest decisions for a movie, especially for a movie that would probably benefit from Tarantino fans rushing out to see it on Thursday.

Bit surprised honestly that this jumped quite a bit (about 25% actually) from yesterday. I kind of assumed that with the holiday and everything people wouldn't be into buying tickets for movies, or at least for one out two weeks from now. Guess not. Really good stuff. Interested to see what Porthos has to say with his data.

In a bit of a hurry (have to see if outdoor cats need comforting during all of the fireworks), but I think it was just a 'normal' day in Sacto.

IMO, it has been over-performing a bit the last couple of days so I would have been surprised to see any sort of jump over and above that.  Mostly just fell back to what I was expecting for this time frame and is more or less keeping pace with all of the current ratios.

Probably just random variation between our two towns.

I am going to miss your pulse updates but this is great. Obviously AMC Empire 25 and Lincoln Sq are among the biggest. In Bay area AMC Bay Street and even Regal Hacienda in Dublin, CA. in LA and suburbs AMC Universal for sure. Boston you must look at AMC Boston Commons.

Preview start times for next Thursday are weird. Both Crawl and Stuber start around 7, but it seems like most of the theaters I'm looking at have Stuber starting around 7:10 (or even 7:20 or 7:05, but almost none show 7:00 right on the dot). Most of the Crawls start at 7, but there are one or two theaters that are also going to make you wait an extra 5 or 10 minutes. Go figure.

Are other theaters around the country also showing these slightly oddball start times?

Also, while looking at other advance sales, I see that Bring The Soul: The Movie has showtimes starting on August 7 and already has sold a decent number of tickets for something a month away. (More expensive than regular tickets too.) What type of box office numbers is BTS going to put up?

That's fair. It's so hard to tell with movies like this. OW range should be huge as it can shift wildly. Just look how wrong basically everyone was on Aladdin includind the most optimistic sans maybe 1-2 people. Previews though were accurate it just keep getting bigger after.

i expect TLK to open big. My family is really excited to see it.

will be interesting if it plays more like a family movie or more like a CBM

Anything in the 20's for previews would certainly suggest an over 150M OW. Can it beat the $169M July OW record?

The other question i'm looking forward to seeing answered in 2 weeks is how close does TLK's OW get to FFH's first 6 days.

I don't see how TLK would fall under 9.5x IM

21m previews would pretty much lock 200m OW imo

Beauty and the Beast had 10.72x with 16.3m previews

Fallen Kingdom had 9.68x with 15.3m previews

Aladdin had 13.07x with 7m previews

OW will be a minimum 8x previews (I’m thinking 9.5-10.5x)

Even with the hype and nostalgia, it’s still a family film that’ll play big on Sat/Sun. I expect it to beat FFH first 6 days which should come in around $190m.

Conversely, I think 8.5x would be the high end for TLK, especially if it does reach 20M. Even if it's a family film, 20M+ is still a lot of demand taken care of. We're also still in the heat of no-school season.

8.5 x $20 would be under BATB’s opening. I don’t see that occurring here.

Total from 6 theaters: 1135(+21)/16866 (6.7% (+0.1))

This is for roughly the past 2 days since I couldn’t do an update yesterday. The number of tickets sold was 52, but one theater seems to have messed up with their Dolby showings at some point because they lost a bunch of tickets.

1.3250x as many seats sold as Toy Story 4 after 10 days of pre-sales

*These shows are glitched sell-outs. However because of the pattern the showtimes form, it's safe to assume how many seats are in the theater and the zero have been sold so far based on how other shows around that time are doing.

Conversely, I think 8.5x would be the high end for TLK, especially if it does reach 20M. Even if it's a family film, 20M+ is still a lot of demand taken care of. We're also still in the heat of no-school season.

Don't really understand. How do you know that a lot of demand has been taken care of with 20M? It seems equally likely that 20M just points to a larger ratio of upcoming demand for the weekend.
