The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I'll do a report later tonight but obviously Downton Abbey is killing it here (I'll post the raw numbers, not just my adjusted estimates based on being in the "old white people" capital of Canada).

Rambo meh so far

But Ad Astra I looked really quick and thought holy crap. I would think a good comp is First Man, but it's already outsold First Man's entire Thursday night with just the first show (which doesn't start for 3 hours) so if walk-ups are good I could see this doing surprisingly well (whether that holds for the actual box office or just my small sample who knows) but it is at least encouraging.

Downton Abbey Greater Philadelphia Area Seat Report Final Count

Sellouts Showings Seats Sold Total Seats Perct Sold
TOTALS 0 20 614 2,963 20.72%

Total Seats Sold Today: 109

Comp

0.323x of Once Upon's final count (1.87M)

0.566x of Hustlers' final count (1.41M)

Broken record, but it's so weird how high the numbers were, only to mellow down to something so average compared to expectations even a couple days ago. But I mean, it's probably super low budget, so does it really matter?

I mean, it matters in the sense that I want something interesting to happen at the box office. So if this comes in below expectations (say, below 20M) and Ad Astra bombs, this is gonna be a weekend that had a lot of potential but kinda klunked it.

Pretty solid walk-ups here. Don't know if that locks 20M in, but it could come pretty close to that number.

When I say does it matter, I mean it more to Focus than us box office nerds.

Thanks! By the way, how do I make the chart myself instead of copying and pasting the format?

Hate to tell you this, but I hand crafted it by clicking on the Source button at the top of a reply box to switch into HTML-edit mode.  I took a couple of my charts I perviously had and just started playing around with (tr) and (td) entires (replacing "(" with "<" and ")" with ">") and through trial and error, I made my own charts.

Once nice thing is now I can add rows to my charts just by copying an entire tr bracketed entry and then switch back into normal editing mode and replace whatever text I want.

I know that @captainwondyful's charts autopost from Google Sheets/Docs, but I am wedded to my Apple Numbers spreadsheets, so hand crafting them when I need to alter them is the way I'm going. :)

Let me provide an example of what I am talking about.  Let's say I just have this:

580

2506

0/117

11420/13926

18.00%

10.64m

And I wanted to add an entire row to it.  I'd switch to HTML edit mode and copy the following lines of code (spoilered to save screen real-estate):

That's basically everything between two sets of 'tr' brackets.  I would then copy-n-paste that directly after that /tr in the HTML source giving this:

Then I switch back to 'normal' mode and change things as I see fit.

So, basically:

1) Switch to HTML edit mode.

2) copy a row I want to add and paste it wherever.

3) Switch back to normal editing mode and away I go.

Adding a column is a similiar process, but slightly more difficult.  There I have to add a "td" pair of brackets to every tr set I have,  Slightly more time consuming, depending on how many rows I have to deal with.  But not that bad once I got the hang of it.

tl;dr: Basic HTML coding, really. :)

That I do.  That way I can hand craft my rainbow colors.

Also, the Rambo sales are amazing* at LS13 tonight.  Will posts full Comps around 12PM EST

====

tl;dr: Basic HTML coding, really. :)

Oof guess I'm better off copying and pasting then

Let me provide an example of what I am talking about.  Let's say I just have this:

Seats Left / Total Seats

Perct Sold

Comp

Pika

0/117

11420/13926

And I wanted to add an entire row to it.  I'd switch to HTML edit mode and copy the following lines of code (spoilered to save screen real-estate):

Oh, for heaven's sakes.  The HTML code isn't showing up properly in that even though it's in a "CODE" block, so it should.      Maybe I'll play with it to look right but I think I more or less explained it so it's probably not necessary.

That I do.  That way I can hand craft my rainbow colors.

Also, the Rambo sales are amazing* at LS13 tonight.  Will posts full Comps around 12PM EST

If I cared, I could add my own colors as well. Though I suspect your way is easier. :P

Well either it is performing horribly in Denver, walkups will be insane, or Rambo is going to miss expectations by a lot. If this is close to how it looks across the US/Canada, then I don’t see how this will get close to a 20M weekend.

Walkups galore! Still, I’m not entirely convinced that it will break 20M. Even with my highest comp, it would need a multiplier of almost 14. Anyways, I’m gonna go with 1.35M for the previews. Right in between Hustlers and Hobbs.

Very weak walk-ups for this one. Definitely seems to be underperforming the national average.

I'm gonna go with $1.3M +/-$100K for the preview number.

The pace essentially stayed around the same for this and didn't really stall as much as Downton Abbey.

I'm gonna go with $1M +/-$100K for the preview number.
