A movie can be entertaining and not actually be a good movie.  And I'm not saying I don't enjoy going to a few of them, but I'm not going to hail the film for being more than it is.  Mindless, cookie cutter spectacle that follows the current trends of the day.

I don't know about that, it would force us a define good at least and will be hard to come with an other definition than entertaining (using the word has meaning: something diverting or engaging), if a movie is engaging enough pass a certain point, diverting enough, it become almost in a trivial way a good one imo.

If mindless cookie cutter spectacle entertain you, it is because you like them and are what you find to be good movies in a way, I will say that Transformer 4 was a bad movie because I could not finish it, if I would have a good time (for that amount of time) it would make it pass automatically to the good movie zone).

Ooh another w/e thread, another piss on the MCU discussion.

Yet some bitch about Hollywood's lack of originality.

Can we call Ethan Hunt an anti MCU guy too?

Scarlett still asking for those huge paychecks? After this year, I don't think she will demand anything huge if it doesn't come from Marvel.

This has been a bad year for her. The films aren't just "disappointments." Ghost in the Shell is a huge flop and although Rough Night has a small budget it opening as low as it is, is not good. But she'll survive because she has Marvel.

Werner Herzog rankings (of the ones I've seen):

You know this is high brow because I have used the tildes to mark my numbers.

~1~ Grizzly Man

~2~ Cave of Forgotten Dreams

~3~ Into the Inferno

~4~ Cobra Verde

~5~ Encounters at the End of the World

~6~ Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World

It gets less high brow now because those are the only ones I've seen.

I'm not saying movies with spectacle are necessarily bad.  And there's more to a movie having depth than just having heavy themes and such.

But I really think Marvel's the best example of this.  They continually make the same movie but just twist it a little and call it different.  They're entertaining to go and watch, but they're really devoid of artistry, and they're films you really have a hard time telling apart when you look back on them.

This isn't really new, every decade has generic movies that are just trend and formula following.  And the same idea applies to other art mediums.

Anyways, it's just some thoughts.

Caps 1 and Vol. 2 really pop. Phase 3 has made an effort to really up the overall design/asthetic. Panther and Ragnarok seem to moving very much in the right direction.

Vol. 2 is the closest thing to Batman Returns. Definitely the most heart and weird in any MCU flick to date.

All CBM nowadays are formulaic as fuck. Gotta check out Legion for something a lot different. It's all about presentation. Wonder Woman is formula done right. That's why it's beloved.

Just now, Ethan Hunt said:

Rango is the best animation of the 2010s. Its not even close

Hmm, this might be an Ethan take I actually almost agree with.

Inside Out, Tintin, and Lego Movie are better, but other than that you're pretty right

Cobra Verde is a Klaus Kinski one you heathen.

Learn your Herzog, boy.

It was too sandwiched between documentaries for me to notice.
