Iirc the 168M budget was after tax incentives, so 200M would definitely not be enough (also unlikely to reach that anyway).

I also doubt this will be a PVOD/streaming hit like Dune because Fury Road was supposed to be like Dune. The whole narrative around Fury Road was that it became a cult hit after its theatrical run, and that it would carry over to Furiosa. WBD will also probably make Dune 2 and Joker 2 their blockbuster priorities for Oscars over Furiosa.

Blaming Marvel after 2023 is wild. Deadpool & Wolverine will be fun to follow lol

Fury Road was a big home video hit. 9 years is just too long of a gap

According to Variety, Furiosa is estimated to lose 75M-95M

So Variety wants to bury Furiosa even more by reporting how much it lost while it still hasn't even left theaters. All these flop reports do nothing but scare people from watching the movie.

Twitter is ugly engagement harvesting nowadays. You rarely know when a person really means something in their twitt or just collecting likes and reposts. Or are they just plain stupid

Also like 90% of that "160,000 likes" is bots.

Marketing always get blamed but the fact is most people that work in marketing for these companies does nothing short of exemplary work. Doesn’t matter how well you market something when audiences just aren’t interested in a Mad Max spin off. Refuse to believe Zaslav ain’t angry about this flopping financially

It can be two things. The interest was low, yes, and knowing what the movie is, I don't think there's a world in which it could have matched Fury Road. But it's also true they didn't sell it as well as they could have. I mean, it really could have used a pair of trailers as effective as these:

I've been rewatching the Comic Con trailer for Fury Road lately a lot as well. The very first trailer. Masterwork

I wish Furiosa had led with its 2nd trailer. The man who sold the world one. That trailer I actually think is pretty fantastic. It's the first trailer that was very whatever

This movie is a big flop. That’s really all there is to it.

It's a bomb. $168m budget and a WW gross that will be right around $170m.

Just because I wanted to test this: looking at 2015 and 2016 physical home video sales (to ensure we cover the main revenue period for all 2015 theatrical releases), Fury Road ranked 10th among 2015 releases (an estimated 51M) versus the film's 21st place box office gross. The Peanuts movie was in 21st place at 27.3M. In 2015 physical media made up 6B and physical media sales + digital sales/rentals combine for 10B. So that's plausibly 40M in early release revenue above a baseline (but also possibly less).

9 years too long and maybe too short (No nostalgia factor yet) ? Specially for a non sequel, that should be working fully on its own like that.

Top Gun, Jurassic Park, Avatar, gap between MadMax3 with Fury Road, Ocean franchise, big gap between entry that still work happen all the time, if the movie deliver.

Some deflated a lot with what feel too much time, but I am not sure we can blame that factor, say Davinci Code, yes 2009->2016 is a good gap, but the down train was already going hard on those.

The last Matrix sequel could have worked, if it was not such a strange product.

Didn’t Australian government paid half of the budget? If so the movie needs like 200M to paid itself

I can see why WB isn’t unhappy with it if it’s the case lol

Shot over eight months, the film employed more than 3,000 people and is Australia's most expensive film to date, with the production costing $333.2 million — $175 million offered via the NSW government, in addition to offsets from the federal government.

WB could be aggressively reimbursing itself faster than the others participants here, it is often natural being those that manage the money going in.

But who is loosing how much is a bit of a semantic talk versus what tend to interest people, net result of all the participant together (being what tell us if movie like that will be made again or not). Maybe the rich financier of Exodus: Gods and Kings for who it was a passion project and didn't mind at all is the only one to have lost money on it, maybe WB did loose money on Cloud Atlas, but those movie as a whole did.

It's a high quality source but I'm sure it is wrong. If you follow links to Australian government websites, you'll see the $175M refers to the total spending in the NSW film fund (which is to cover over a half decade) and I've found references to other films getting this money before and after Furiosa's filming. It's just clearly a misreading of the financial data. Last year the Australian government tried to slash the budget of various film programs including the NSW one, and they obviously can't reducing funding if all of the funding has been paid out.

This has been such a fun movie to follow.  Granted that is because I take great pleasure in the pain and suffering of others.

Sounds like a very fulfilling life!

Been thinking about this movie's absolute tanking this week and I wanted to just air out an anecdote about the state of general audiences' interest in theaters. Hopefully you get something from this.

I got lunch with my brother, cousins and one of their wives last Saturday. My cousin asked me about "How was Planet of the Apes?". I told him it was ok, but then asked "have you seen Furiosa?" I know for a fact that Mad Max Fury Road is one of his favorite movies ever. So you would think it'd be obvious he'd be interested in a new one. And he responded "No, I heard it's lame."

I wish I'd challenged him on that like "have you seen the reviews? Critics and audiences alike are reviewing it very positively". But I kinda just shut down bc I never want to be the annoying guy who starts yelling about how you need to go to the theaters, and he's also really stubborn so I didn't want to make a fuss. I wish I asked where'd you hear that from, because I just know he hadn't actually read that from credible sources, he probably just saw some dumbass instagram comment talking about how "woke" it was. I guaranteed him it's really good, and since he loved Fury Road, he'll like this. But will he actually go see it? I give it a 0% chance. I'm not changing his mind.

Then we started talking about Fury Road, and how he showed it to his newly married wife, and how she turned it off after 15 mins bc she was just asking questions and was weirded out. She's a "newbie" for lack of a better term, a bit ticktock brained when it comes to attention span, but I think that mindset kinda explains people's feelings about Furiosa and Fury Road even. It's too weird. Even though I think and many think that Fury Road especially is a masterclass in worldbuilding with little to no exposition, general audiences need that shit. And maybe that's why these movies don't connect with GAs as much as it does with film people like us.

My other cousin who was there, his brother, asked me last weekend if there are any movies out? I also know for a fact that he LOVES Fury Road. I told him Furiosa's out and is great. He said, "OH IT'S OUT?". I told him yes and that he should go see it. Has he? No.

While we were leaving, there was a theater on the other end of the place we ate at, my older brother asked me "Is there anything out right now?" just completely oblivious to the conversation we were having at lunch. I said "Yeah Furiosa's out right now, it's great". Didn't care, didn't suggest we go see it, hasn't watched it.

Anyway, depressing shit.

the more I think about this movie the more I like it; even the final confrontation, which I thought was kinda awkward when I saw it, now seems pretty cool
